Datasensing S62 Series Compact Photoelectric Sensor

S62 series

The S62 series is a family of cubic 50×50×18 mm photoelectric sensors offering all standard sensing functions in a single compact plastic housing with IP67 protection. Variants include through-beam (S62..F/G, up to 25 m), retroreflective (S62..A, 13 m), polarized retroreflective (S62..B, 8 m), diffuse/background suppression (S62..C, up to 2 m), laser background suppression (S62-PL..M, 30–350 mm), and IR/red-LED background suppression (S62-PA, 30–300 mm or 60–1200 mm). DC models operate on 10–30 VDC and provide PNP or NPN NO+NC outputs; AC models support 24–240 VAC / 24–60 VDC with a relay output. Response times range from 200 µs (laser models) to 25 ms (LED retroreflective/diffuse models), and switching frequencies range from 20 Hz (AC relay) to 3.5 kHz (laser BGS models).

Technical overview

The Datasensing S62 series unifies multiple photoelectric sensing principles inside a single 50 x 50 x 18 mm ABS cube, giving installers the freedom to standardise on one mechanical footprint across an entire line while still matching the detection physics to each specific task. The through-beam variants (S62..F/G) reach up to 25 m and suit wide-aisle conveyor corridors or pallet-gate detection where generous excess gain is essential. Retroreflective models cover 13 m with a standard reflector and 8 m with polarised optics for reliable detection of shiny or transparent objects. Diffuse background suppression (BGS) variants cover 30 mm to 1200 mm (LED) or 30 mm to 350 mm (laser), resolving the target against its background without a reflector or an opposed emitter, simplifying mounting in tight or single-sided-access locations. All variants share a 10–30 VDC supply with PNP or NPN NO+NC transistor outputs at up to 100 mA, or optionally a 24–240 VAC / 24–60 VDC relay SPDT output for direct integration into legacy relay-ladder control panels.

Switching speed varies dramatically across the family and is the primary axis an integrator should evaluate. Laser BGS models (S62-PL..M) deliver a 200 µs response time and 3.5 kHz switching frequency, making them suitable for high-speed sorting applications where small objects pass at several metres per second. LED BGS models step down to 0.5 ms response at up to 1 kHz; retroreflective and diffuse LED models drop further to 25 ms / 1 kHz, appropriate for general part-present detection on slower lines. Through-beam models provide 1 ms response at 500 Hz. The light source also changes with application: red LED at 640/660 nm for precise spot detection and good contrast on most surfaces; IR LED at 880 nm for diffuse detection on dark or absorptive targets; and a red laser at 645–665 nm (Class 1/2) for the BGS laser variants where a defined, high-intensity spot is needed to resolve narrow objects or achieve accurate background cutoff over the 30–350 mm laser BGS range.

Wiring connects via an M12 4-pole connector or a pre-cabled Ø4 mm / Ø5 mm 2 m cable — both standard in industrial automation and compatible with widely available M12 field-wiring accessories. The IP67-rated plastic housing (ABS body, PMMA window, polycarbonate lens) withstands wash-down and immersion up to 1 m, covering most food and beverage and packaging environments where sensors see regular cleaning cycles. Operating range is –10 to +55 °C with storage from –20 to +70 °C. At 40 g in connector form the sensor is light enough for mounting on articulated brackets where mass is a design constraint. The combination of broad supply range, dual polarity outputs, relay option, and the full range of sensing geometries means the S62 series can serve as a single-sensor platform across detection, counting, jam detection, end-of-line gate, and trigger-to-camera roles throughout a mixed facility.

Best for

  • High-speed small-object detection on sorting and packaging lines where the laser BGS variant's 200 µs response and 3.5 kHz switching frequency handle objects moving at belt speeds of several metres per second.
  • Transparent or glossy object detection (bottles, blister packs, polished metal parts) using the polarised retroreflective variant at up to 8 m, which discriminates reflected light polarisation to suppress false triggers from specular surfaces.
  • Presence and jam detection on conveyors in food, beverage, and wash-down environments where the IP67-rated housing and wide 10–30 VDC supply accommodate hygiene-rated panels and frequent cleaning cycles.
  • Camera trigger sourcing in vision inspection cells where the through-beam or laser BGS variant provides a precise, repeatable pulse to initiate image acquisition, leveraging the sub-millisecond response time to minimise positional jitter at the image moment.
  • Direct integration into legacy PLC or relay-ladder panels via the AC model's SPDT relay output (rated 250 VAC / 30 VDC, 2 A) without requiring an interposing relay or solid-state output module.

Selection notes

  • Choose the sensing variant before selecting a model: through-beam (up to 25 m) for long-range or high excess-gain needs; retroreflective (13 m) or polarised retroreflective (8 m) for medium-range single-sided mounting; diffuse BGS for close-range part-present detection without a reflector (LED BGS up to 1200 mm, laser BGS 30–350 mm); laser BGS for small objects or high-speed lines.
  • Match the output type to the controller input: DC PNP for sourcing inputs (most modern PLC modules), DC NPN for sinking inputs, or relay for AC panels. The same physical model does not switch output polarity — specify at ordering.
  • Verify that target speed at the detection point falls within the switching frequency budget of the chosen variant. At 3.5 kHz the laser BGS model can reliably resolve objects separated by as little as ~0.29 ms in time; the 20 Hz AC relay model requires objects to be present for at least 50 ms, ruling it out for fast-moving targets.
  • The 30–350 mm laser BGS working distance range is a hard constraint — the background cutoff is preset or adjustable within that window, so confirm that the mounting geometry places the target within the detection zone and the background outside it before installation.
  • Laser variants (S62-PL..M) are Class 1 or Class 2 depending on sub-model; Class 2 requires a documented risk assessment and appropriate warning labels under machinery safety standards. Confirm the class of the specific variant ordered if working in a guarded enclosure or near personnel.
