Datasensing S85-MH-5-Y13-OOY TOF Laser Distance Sensor

S85-MH-5-Y13-OOY

The S85-MH-5-Y13-OOY uses Time-of-Flight technology with a Class 2 visible red laser (658 nm) to measure distance from 0 to 20000 mm with 1 mm resolution, 7 mm accuracy and 1 mm repeatability. Selectable response time is 15 ms (fast), 30 ms (medium) or 45 ms (slow). It provides a scalable analog output (4-20 mA or 0-10 V), two NPN/PNP digital outputs and an RS485 serial interface, and is programmable via an onboard keyboard and display. Housing is die-cast zinc metal rated IP67 with an M12 8-pin connector, powered at 24 VDC +/-20%.

Technical overview

The S85-MH-5-Y13-OOY is a Time-of-Flight (TOF) laser distance sensor: it emits a Class 2 visible red laser at 658 nm and measures how long the light takes to return from the target, converting that interval into an absolute distance reading. Because TOF derives range from time rather than triangulation geometry, this unit works over a long span - from 0 up to 20000 mm (20 m) - measuring directly off the target surface, which is its defining advantage over short-range triangulation laser sensors. It resolves distance to 1 mm with 1 mm repeatability, while stated accuracy is 7 mm; that distinction matters for installers, because the sensor is excellent at detecting small relative changes and consistent position (the 1 mm repeatability) even though its absolute reading may sit several millimetres off. The 658 nm visible red spot is a practical benefit during commissioning since you can see exactly where the beam lands and align the sensor to the target by eye.

Output and interfacing are built for both control and measurement roles. A scalable analog output is available as either 4-20 mA or 0-10 V, letting you map any window of the 0-20 m range onto the full analog span for a PLC, drive or HMI - useful when you only care about, say, a 2 m travel zone and want maximum analog resolution across it. Two digital outputs are configurable as NPN or PNP, so the sensor can act as a programmable distance switch (presence, height threshold, position limit) and feed a camera trigger or a PLC input directly without level-shifting hardware. An RS-485 serial interface provides digital read-out and remote configuration for integration into a fieldbus or multi-drop measurement network. The onboard keyboard and display make the device self-contained: you can teach thresholds, scale the analog output and pick the response time at the sensor itself, without a laptop or software, which simplifies field setup and later re-tuning.

Response time is selectable as 15 ms (fast), 30 ms (medium) or 45 ms (slow), giving the installer a direct trade between speed and measurement stability - the fast setting suits moving objects or high-throughput conveyors, while the slower settings steady the reading on difficult or low-reflectivity targets. Environmentally, the sensor is built for the factory floor: a die-cast zinc metal housing rated IP67, an M12 8-pin connector, and operation from -15 to +50 degC. It runs on 24 VDC (+/-20%) at 3 W, in a compact 37 x 62 x 60 mm body. As a vision peripheral it is not a camera but a complementary device: it provides the absolute distance/height datum a vision system needs - for example triggering a camera when an object reaches a set distance, supplying a Z-axis reading for robot guidance, or gating a 2D code read when a part is in focus range.

Best for

  • Dimensional and height measurement on conveyors - reporting box or pallet height as a scaled 4-20 mA or 0-10 V signal to a PLC across the full 20 m range with 1 mm repeatability.
  • Robot guidance - supplying an absolute Z-axis distance reference (e.g. approach or stand-off distance to a part or bin) for pick, place and de-palletising cells in automotive and packaging lines.
  • Logistics sortation - detecting object position or presence at a set distance via the configurable NPN/PNP digital outputs to gate diverters, gates or scanners on a sortation conveyor.
  • Long-range position and travel monitoring - measuring crane, shuttle, lift or carriage position over many metres where short-range triangulation sensors cannot reach, using the visible red spot for easy alignment.
  • Camera trigger by distance - firing an inspection or code-reading camera the instant a part arrives within the correct working/focus distance, then reading the exact stand-off over RS-485 for traceability.

Selection notes

  • Match the measurement role to the spec split: with 1 mm resolution and 1 mm repeatability but 7 mm accuracy, this sensor is ideal for detecting relative changes, thresholds and consistent positioning; if you need absolute distance correct to better than a few millimetres, plan to teach/zero against a known reference or choose a higher-accuracy device.
  • Scale the analog output to your zone. Because the 4-20 mA / 0-10 V output is scalable, map it to just the portion of the 0-20 m range you actually use to get the finest practical analog resolution on the PLC, drive or HMI.
  • Pick the response time deliberately: 15 ms fast for moving targets and high conveyor speed, 30/45 ms for low-reflectivity or unstable surfaces where the slower setting steadies the reading. Verify the chosen rate against your part spacing and line speed.
  • Plan the wiring around the M12 8-pin connector. Configure the two digital outputs as NPN or PNP to match the receiving PLC/camera input, and use RS-485 for digital read-out and remote configuration; the onboard keyboard/display allows full setup without a laptop.
  • Confirm the install environment: IP67 die-cast zinc housing and -15 to +50 degC operating range on 24 VDC at 3 W. Keep the target within the operating temperature band, and as a Class 2 visible red (658 nm) laser, observe standard eye-safety placement so the beam is not aimed at operators.
