Omron / Sentech FLV-FS74 Shadowless Dome Ring Light

FLV-FS74

The FLV-FS74 is part of Omron's FLV-FS series shadowless dome ring lights, using a uniquely designed diffusion plate to produce highly uniform illumination through reflection and diffusion that eliminates the influence of small surface irregularities while highlighting features created by changes in inclination. It has a 74 mm external ring diameter, a 20 mm internal ring diameter and a 64 mm lighting-area diameter in an aluminum-alloy case, and weighs 140 g. The unit is offered in three color variants: FLV-FS74W (white, 5.2 W), FLV-FS74R (red, 3.5 W) and FLV-FS74B (blue, 5.2 W). It is a controller-driven light that connects to Omron FLV-TCC or FLV-ATC lighting controllers, which supply 24 VDC, and is typically used for edge positioning, size measurement and bump detection on metal parts.

Technical overview

The Omron FLV-FS74 is a shadowless dome ring light, and the word "dome" describes both its optical behaviour and its purpose. Rather than throwing light directly at the part, the FLV-FS series uses a uniquely designed diffusion plate so the LED output is reflected and re-diffused before it reaches the surface. The result is highly uniform illumination that eliminates the influence of small surface irregularities that would otherwise produce distracting specular glints, while still highlighting features created by changes in inclination. In practical terms, this geometry is the standard answer for irregular or glossy surfaces such as machined metal, where direct or ring lighting would create hotspots and shadows that confuse an inspection algorithm. The emission is diffuse by design, so it is not a tool for raking out fine scratches the way a low-angle bar light is, but rather for producing an evenly lit, low-contrast field where edges, geometry and gross topography stand out cleanly.

Physically, the unit is compact: a 74 mm external ring diameter, a 20 mm internal ring diameter (the central aperture a camera looks through), and a 64 mm lighting-area diameter, all in an aluminium-alloy case at 140 g. That 64 mm lit field sets the practical part-size envelope, this is a light for small components and localized features, not for illuminating large assemblies. The 20 mm inner ring defines the coaxial viewing path, so the camera and lens must be sized and positioned to look down through that opening with the dome covering the part below. Because it is a dome, the light is intended to sit close to and over the part, and the small footprint and low weight make it straightforward to mount on a fixed inspection station or end-of-arm fixture. The aluminium-alloy housing provides mechanical robustness and a degree of thermal dissipation appropriate to continuous-duty LED operation.

The FLV-FS74 is a controller-driven light, not a self-contained fixture: it must be connected to an Omron FLV-TCC or FLV-ATC lighting controller, which supplies the 24 VDC the LEDs need. Connection is made through a 2-pin lighting connector and an FLV-XC cable back to the controller. This architecture is what lets the nominally continuous light be operated in a stable, regulated way and, through the FLV controller, driven in strobe or overdrive modes when higher instantaneous brightness or motion freezing is required. The light is offered in three colour variants on the same body: white (FLV-FS74W, 5.2 W) and blue (FLV-FS74B, 5.2 W) for general and higher-contrast monochrome work, and red (FLV-FS74R, 3.5 W, roughly 635 nm) where a longer wavelength better suits the surface or the camera's sensitivity. Choosing the wavelength is therefore a design-in decision made at order time, since the colour is fixed per part number rather than switchable in the field.

Best for

  • Edge positioning and dimensional/size measurement on small machined metal parts, where uniform diffuse light gives clean, repeatable edges
  • Bump detection and topography (inclination-change) features on metal surfaces that would glint under direct lighting
  • Surface inspection of glossy or irregular components where specular hotspots must be suppressed
  • Defect inspection on reflective small parts in automotive and electronics production
  • AI-based defect inspection that benefits from a consistent, low-shadow image field across the 64 mm lit area

Selection notes

  • Size the application to the 64 mm lighting-area diameter and the 20 mm internal ring: the part and feature must fit the lit field, and the camera/lens must view coaxially down through the 20 mm opening.
  • Budget for an Omron FLV-TCC or FLV-ATC controller, the light is controller-driven and will not run without one supplying 24 VDC over the 2-pin connector and FLV-XC cable.
  • Pick the colour variant at order time: white or blue (both 5.2 W) for general and higher-contrast work, red (3.5 W, ~635 nm) where wavelength suits the surface; the colour is fixed per part number, not field-switchable.
  • Use the controller's strobe/overdrive capability if you need motion freezing or extra instantaneous brightness; the bare light is otherwise a continuous source.
  • Plan the mechanical install around a close, over-the-part dome geometry; the small 74 mm OD footprint and 140 g weight ease mounting on fixed stations or end-of-arm fixtures, but it is not suited to large parts or long working distances.
  • Remember the diffuse dome geometry suppresses surface texture; if your defect is a fine scratch needing raking light, a low-angle source is the better tool, the dome is for shadowless, glint-free uniformity.
