Datasensing S65-PA-5-M13-OOZ TOF Distance Sensor (IO-Link)

S65-PA-5-M13-OOZ

The S65-PA-5-M13-OOZ is a long-range background-suppression sensor based on Time-of-Flight technology with an infrared LED emitter and an embedded green LED alignment pointer, detecting objects from 0.3 m up to 5 m (6% black target up to ~3.5 m). Response time is about 8.5 ms with a switching frequency below 65 Hz. It offers two independently programmable outputs (NPN/PNP) and an IO-Link V1.1 interface, with load current up to 100 mA. The compact 50 x 50 x 25 mm ABS plastic housing is rated IP67 with an M12 5-pole connector and is powered at 24 VDC +/-20%.

Technical overview

The S65-PA-5-M13-OOZ is a Time-of-Flight (TOF) distance sensor that uses an 850 nm infrared LED emitter to determine how far away a target is from the measured travel of the light pulse, rather than relying on reflected intensity. This is what gives it true background suppression: because the switching point is set by measured distance and not by how bright the return signal is, the sensor reliably separates a foreground object from the surface behind it and stays largely indifferent to target colour and surface finish. It works over a 0.3 m to 5 m window, with a 300 mm blind zone close in where no detection occurs. Sensing range does depend on target reflectivity at the far end of the scale: a bright, cooperative target is seen to the full 5 m, while a dark 6% black target is reliably detected to roughly 3.5 m. An embedded green LED acts as a visible alignment pointer, so the installer can see exactly where the otherwise-invisible infrared spot is landing during setup.

Electrically, the sensor is built to drop straight into a PLC or vision cell. It provides two independently programmable solid-state outputs that can each be configured as NPN or PNP, switching loads up to 100 mA, and it carries an IO-Link V1.1 interface on the same M12 connector. In standard switching mode the two outputs behave as ordinary distance setpoints, useful for presence/absence or for flagging two different thresholds; over IO-Link the sensor instead streams its data digitally, which lets you read the measured distance as a process value, push parameters from the controller, and recover the configuration automatically after a device swap. As a machine-vision building block this makes it a clean external trigger or gating device: wire one output to a camera trigger input to fire an acquisition when a part crosses a taught distance, or read the IO-Link distance value directly as a coarse measurement or height check. Response time is about 8.5 ms with a switching frequency below 65 Hz, which suits conveyor-paced part detection and indexing but is not intended for very high-speed, tightly-timed flash synchronisation.

The package is a compact 50 x 50 x 25 mm ABS plastic housing rated IP67, sealed against dust and temporary immersion, and terminated in a 5-pole M12 connector that carries power, the two outputs and the IO-Link line. It runs on 24 VDC with a generous +/-20% tolerance, so it tolerates the supply sag common on busy machine frames, and it is rated for ambient temperatures from -15 to +55 degC. The plastic body and IP67 rating make it well suited to general factory, packaging and logistics environments, though the ABS construction and stated temperature band mean it is aimed at standard industrial duty rather than washdown chemical exposure or high-heat zones.

Best for

  • Detecting boxes and parcels on a sortation conveyor at distances up to several metres, using true background suppression so the moving belt and side rails behind the item do not cause false triggers regardless of carton colour.
  • Triggering an overhead inspection or barcode camera when a package crosses a taught distance threshold, with one of the two outputs wired straight to the camera trigger input.
  • Coarse dimensional or height checks on the line by reading the live distance value over IO-Link, for example confirming a stack or product is within an expected height band before it advances.
  • Presence/absence and end-of-travel detection on packaging machinery where a long 5 m reach and a 300 mm-onward field are needed and a short-range diffuse sensor would not span the gap.
  • Pallet, tote or load-position confirmation in a logistics cell, where the sensor's IP67 ABS housing and 24 VDC +/-20% supply tolerance suit a typical warehouse environment.

Selection notes

  • Confirm the working range fits your geometry: detection starts at 0.3 m (anything inside that blind zone is invisible) and reaches 5 m only for bright targets; size the install for ~3.5 m if your worst-case target is dark like a 6% black surface.
  • Decide early between standard switching and IO-Link operation. If you only need a switched trigger, use the NPN/PNP outputs (each independently programmable, 100 mA max); if you want the measured distance as a value, automatic parameter recovery on device swap, or remote configuration, run it on an IO-Link V1.1 master.
  • Match the timing to your application. With ~8.5 ms response and <65 Hz switching this is a part-detection and triggering sensor for conveyor speeds, not a fast strobe-synchronisation or high-frequency measurement device.
  • Use the green LED alignment pointer to aim the invisible 850 nm IR spot during commissioning, and verify the M12 5-pole pinout matches your cordset so power, both outputs and the IO-Link line are wired correctly.
  • Check the environment against the ABS/IP67 rating and -15 to +55 degC band before specifying it for washdown, chemically aggressive or high-temperature areas; for those, a stainless or higher-spec sensor would be the better alternative.
