The Basler Light Ring-100OD-White is a bright-field ring illuminator: a flat annular array of white LEDs (5000 K) that mounts coaxially around the camera lens so light leaves from the same axis as the camera looks. The 67-101 mm annular luminous area surrounds the optical axis and floods the target with broadly directional, near-on-axis light. Because the illumination is white rather than a single narrow wavelength, it renders true color and is the natural default when an application has to preserve printed color, distinguish parts by hue, or simply present a familiar, evenly lit scene. Geometrically, a ring at this scale is best at lifting surface print, labels, and assembly features into clear contrast, and at producing even fill on flat or gently contoured parts; its near-coaxial angle does, however, tend to wash out very fine surface texture and can throw a bright specular hotspot back off glossy or mirror-like surfaces, which is the classic trade-off of ring geometry.
Positioning is built around the recommended 100-250 mm working distance, measured from the face of the ring to the part. Within that band the annular footprint overlaps and blends into an even pool of light across a typical small-to-medium field of view; mounting much closer concentrates a tighter, brighter ring that can show its individual emission lobes, while pulling back toward 250 mm spreads and softens coverage at the cost of intensity. The 1255 lm output gives generous headroom for short exposures, and the optional diffuser over the PMMA light cover is the lever to reach for when a glossy part needs the harsh ring reflection softened into a smoother wash. The light runs from a single 24 VDC (plus or minus 10 percent) supply and draws 9 W in voltage-control mode (450 mA in current-control mode), so it sits comfortably on a standard industrial 24 V rail.
Operationally, the unit carries its own internal LED controller with two modes, continuous and strobe, which means no external controller is mandatory for either steady illumination or flashed acquisition; for tighter synchronization or overdriven flash an optional Basler SLP Strobe Controller can drive it instead. Strobing the light in step with the camera exposure freezes motion on moving lines and lets the LEDs run brighter during the flash window than they safely could continuously. Connection is a 4-pin M8 male connector, and the package is compact and light: a 110 x 121 x 14 mm black anodized aluminum housing with a PMMA light cover at 205 g, thin enough to sit close to the optics in tight stations. Standard units are rated IP54 for protected indoor and lightly contaminated environments, with dedicated IP67 order numbers (variant 2200002470) for washdown or dusty lines. Rated operating range is 10-30 C, extendable to 45 C with adequate heat dissipation, so mounting on or near a metal bracket that sinks heat is worth planning for in warmer enclosures.
Best for
Surface and defect inspection of flat electronic assemblies such as PCBs and connectors, where the near-coaxial white ring lifts print, components, and surface flaws into even contrast at a 100-250 mm standoff.
OCR/OCV reading of printed lot codes, dates, and human-readable text on automotive and packaged goods, using the true-color 5000 K rendering to keep printed marks legible.
Traceability and code-reading stations where a compact, broadly even white light around the lens illuminates labels and 1D/2D codes on cartons and parts.
Packaging line inspection (fill, label presence, print quality) where strobe mode synchronized to the camera freezes product moving past the station.
General-purpose inspection of metal and machined parts that need a familiar, evenly lit white-light view rather than wavelength-specific contrast, with an IP67 variant available for harsher metalworking environments.
Selection notes
Size the ring to the field of view and standoff: the 67-101 mm annular luminous area and 100-250 mm recommended working distance suit small-to-medium fields; for much larger parts or longer standoffs a larger or higher-output light may be needed, and very glossy surfaces may call for the optional diffuser or a different geometry (dome or low-angle dark-field) to avoid specular hotspots.
Confirm the camera and lens fit within the 67-101 mm luminous opening and that the 14 mm-thin, 205 g body mounts at the intended distance; the ring is designed to sit coaxially around the lens, so plan bracketry that keeps the optical axis centered in the annulus.
Power and wiring are straightforward: a single 24 VDC (plus or minus 10 percent) rail at 9 W and a 4-pin M8 male connector. Decide up front between voltage-control and current-control operation, since current control draws 450 mA, and route the M8 cable accordingly.
Choose the trigger path deliberately. The internal LED controller already provides continuous and strobe modes, so no external controller is required for basic use; add the optional Basler SLP Strobe Controller only when you need tighter exposure synchronization or overdriven flash for fast-moving lines.
Match the IP rating to the environment: standard models are IP54 for clean or lightly contaminated indoor stations, while the dedicated IP67 order number (2200002470) covers washdown and dust. Also budget for thermal headroom, as the 10-30 C range only extends to 45 C with proper heat dissipation.

Applications this camera is commonly selected for. Open one to see the full recommended hardware and approach.
Get a first image quickly with the pylon Viewer, then move into the pylon SDK for your application. These cameras are GenICam/GenTL-compliant, so any compliant vision software can drive them as well.
Download and install the pylon Camera Software Suite for your OS from Basler. This provides the pylon Viewer, the GenTL transport-layer producers and the pylon SDK (C/C++/.NET/Python). On Windows the installer adds the needed drivers; on Linux follow the included setup notes for USB and network permissions.
2. Connect the camera and check the link
Cable the camera to its matching interface: GigE Vision to a GigE port (use a quality cable and, ideally, a dedicated NIC with jumbo frames enabled), USB3 Vision to a USB 3.x port with the supplied cable, or CoaXPress to the frame grabber. Provide power where required (PoE, USB bus power, or PoCXP). Open the pylon Viewer and confirm the camera appears in the device list; for GigE, make sure the camera and NIC are on the same subnet.
3. Grab a first image and set exposure, gain and pixel format
Select the camera in the pylon Viewer and start a continuous grab. Adjust exposure time and gain until the image is well exposed (avoid clipped highlights), set the pixel format (e.g. Mono8 or a Bayer/RGB format), and focus the lens. Use a test pattern if the lens or scene is not ready yet.
4. Configure triggering and acquisition
Decide between free-run and triggered acquisition. For synchronized capture, set the trigger source (software or a hardware line on the I/O connector), trigger mode and any debounce or exposure mode, then verify timing. Note the parameter names you change in the Viewer feature tree, as you will reuse them in code.
5. Move to the SDK or a GenICam-compliant library
Recreate your settings in code with the pylon SDK (C, C++, .NET or Python) to open the device, apply the same features and pull frames into your pipeline; pylon vTools and pylon AI can add processing blocks. Because the cameras are GenICam/GenTL standard, third-party vision libraries work too. Once the image stream is stable, you can route frames to a deep-learning inspection such as Rosepetal for automated defect detection.
Frequently asked questions
No. The Light Ring-100OD-White has an internal LED controller with two operating modes, continuous and strobe, so it works standalone for both steady and flashed illumination. An optional Basler SLP Strobe Controller can be added when you want to drive strobe externally for tighter synchronization or overdrive.
Basler recommends a light working distance of 100-250 mm, measured from the face of the ring to the part. Within that band the annular output blends into an even pool of light; mounting closer concentrates a brighter ring and mounting farther softens and spreads coverage while reducing intensity.
It runs from 24 VDC plus or minus 10 percent, drawing 9 W in voltage-control mode (or 450 mA in current-control mode), and connects through a 4-pin M8 male connector, so it sits on a standard 24 V industrial rail.
Standard models are rated IP54, suitable for clean or lightly contaminated indoor stations. For washdown or dusty lines, choose the dedicated IP67 order number (variant 2200002470), which provides the higher sealing rating.
This is a white (5000 K) light, which renders true color and is ideal when you need to preserve printed color, read human-readable text, or present a familiar evenly lit scene. If your application instead relies on wavelength-specific contrast, such as enhancing a particular feature with monochromatic light and a matched filter, a single-wavelength light would be more appropriate.
