DCM Sistemes ALS0402A Diffuse Ringlight

ALS0402A

The ALS0402A is the smallest model of DCM Sistemes' ALS series of diffuse ringlights, measuring 48x48x27 mm with a 21 mm inner diameter and weighing 75 g in a black anodized aluminium IP40 housing (IP43 when mounted vertically). It runs on 24 VDC (±3%) and is available in UV (365/400 nm), blue (470 nm), green (525 nm), red (630 nm), IR (850/880 nm), white and RGB, with instantaneous consumption of about 0.8 W for blue/green and 1.3 W for red/IR continuous variants. The light supports continuous, powered and strobe modes; strobe operation requires a DCM VS-series controller, while iBlueDrive variants integrate the driver inline with a 3P aerial male connector (715 mm cable). Its recommended working distance is greater than 40 mm and it provides diffuse frontal lighting that makes textures uniform, eliminates reflections and reduces shadows on reflective objects.

Technical overview

The ALS0402A is the smallest model in DCM Sistemes' ALS series of diffuse LED ring lights, packaged in a 48 x 48 x 27 mm black anodized aluminium housing (outer diameter 42 mm) with a 21 mm inner bore and a weight of just 75 g. Because it is a ring geometry, the camera looks straight through that central 21 mm aperture while the LEDs surround the lens axis, producing coaxial-style frontal lighting. The key differentiator versus a bare ring is the diffuser: rather than projecting bright LED hot-spots, the ALS0402A spreads the light to deliver uniform, low-glare frontal illumination. In practice this makes surface textures appear even, eliminates specular reflections and softens shadows on shiny or curved parts, which is exactly what you want when you are imaging reflective metal, glossy plastic, foil or printed labels and need consistent contrast across the whole field rather than a mirror-bright center.

Electrically the unit is straightforward to design in: it runs on 24 VDC at +/-3% with very low instantaneous draw, roughly 0.8 W for the blue and green continuous variants and about 1.3 W for the red and IR variants, so it adds negligible load to a panel supply and runs cool. Three operating modes are supported. Continuous and powered modes need no controller and can be driven directly from your 24 VDC rail, while strobe operation requires a DCM VS-series controller to pulse the LEDs in sync with the camera trigger for brighter, motion-freezing flashes. An iBlueDrive variant is also offered that integrates the driver inline on a 3P aerial male connector with a 715 mm cable, simplifying wiring when you do not want a separate controller box. Standard units use a 2P male chassis connector (Type C/P/S). Recommended working distance is greater than 40 mm, which sets the minimum standoff between the ring face and the part.

Wavelength is highly configurable, and that is where the real application leverage lies. The ALS0402A is available in UV (365/400 nm), blue (470 nm), green (525 nm), red (630 nm), IR (850/880 nm), white and RGB. Monochromatic colors let you exploit contrast physics: red or IR penetrate and flatten color variation for code and label reading, blue and green sharpen fine surface detail and edges, UV excites fluorescence for adhesive, coating or security-mark verification, while white suits color inspection and RGB gives switchable channels. Emission can be specified as narrow (/AN), medium (/AM) or wide (/AW), and an optional /FDR diffuser filter is available to soften output further. Environmentally the housing is rated IP40 (IP43 when the light falls vertically) with an operating range of 0 to 40 C, which positions it for clean-to-moderate factory environments rather than washdown lines.

Best for

  • High-contrast surface and defect inspection of reflective or glossy parts, where the diffuser suppresses specular hot-spots and shadows for even illumination
  • OCR/OCV and print-quality verification on labels and marked surfaces, using a wavelength (e.g. red 630 nm) chosen to flatten background color
  • 1D/2D code reading and traceability where uniform frontal light improves contrast on printed or laser-marked codes
  • Compact, space-constrained vision stations on small lenses, given the 42 mm outer diameter, 21 mm bore and 75 g weight
  • Specialized contrast tasks via wavelength selection, such as UV (365/400 nm) fluorescence checks for adhesive/coating presence or IR (850/880 nm) imaging through colored films

Selection notes

  • Confirm the lens outer diameter fits through the 21 mm inner bore and that your standoff respects the recommended working distance of greater than 40 mm before committing to this ring size
  • Match the wavelength to the inspection physics: monochromatic blue/green for fine detail and edges, red/IR for code and label contrast, UV for fluorescence, white/RGB for color work; this is specified at order time
  • Decide the drive scheme early: continuous and powered modes run directly from 24 VDC with no controller, but strobe operation requires a DCM VS-series controller, or you can order an iBlueDrive variant with the driver integrated inline (3P aerial, 715 mm cable)
  • Specify the emission spread to suit your geometry and field, choosing narrow (/AN), medium (/AM) or wide (/AW), and consider the optional /FDR diffuser filter if you need even softer, glare-free output
  • Check the environment against IP40 (IP43 only when the light falls vertically) and the 0 to 40 C operating range; this is not a washdown- or high-temperature-rated fixture
