DCM Sistemes SAX0505A-525i Coaxial Light (Green 525nm)

SAX0505A-525i

The DCM Sistemes SAX0505A is a diffused axial/coaxial illuminator with external dimensions 100x75x62 mm and a 52x50 mm illuminated area, available in 470/525/630/850 nm, RGB and white; this variant is green 525 nm. It operates from 24 VDC and supports continuous, strobe and iBlueDrive (integrated controller) modes; the -525i iBlueDrive variant draws 6.2 W and can be triggered in NPN/PNP/TTL continuous, dim or strobe mode (factory 47 pulses/s, configurable up to 5000 pulses/s). Protection is IP40 with a chassis connector (2P for continuous, 3P for iBlueDrive). Light is reflected by an internal 45-degree half-mirror to provide on-axis illumination.

Technical overview

The SAX0505A-525i is a diffused axial, or coaxial, illuminator: rather than ringing the object with light from the side, it places an internal 45-degree half-mirror (beamsplitter) directly in the optical path so that green 525 nm light travels outward along the very same axis the camera looks down. The camera images through the mirror, and the scene is lit by rays that strike the surface head-on and reflect straight back. The practical consequence is that flat, specular, or polished surfaces are rendered evenly and bright, while any feature that is not perpendicular to the axis (an engraved character, a scratch, a recessed mark, a dent, a printed code) tips light away from the lens and reads as dark. This dark-on-bright contrast is exactly what coaxial geometry is for, and it is the reason this light suppresses the hot reflections and hard shadows that defeat ring and bar lights on mirror-like parts. The green 525 nm wavelength is a sensible default for monochrome cameras; the SAX0505A family is also offered in 470 nm blue, 630 nm red, 850 nm IR, RGB and white, so wavelength can be matched to a specific substrate or paired with a band-pass filter on the lens if ambient light is a concern.

Geometrically the unit is compact at 100 x 62 x 75 mm and projects a 52 x 50 mm illuminated field, which sets the practical ceiling on the part area it can cover on-axis; larger fields of view will see the bright zone fall off toward the edges. Because the light works through its mirror along the lens axis, mounting is straightforward: the camera looks into the exit window of the illuminator and the assembly is positioned over the feature of interest, with the diffuser delivering soft, even on-axis light rather than a focused spot. The diffused design trades some peak intensity for uniformity, which is what keeps reflective surfaces from blooming. Protection is IP40, meaning it is built for clean, dry, enclosed inspection stations and protected from solids but not sealed against washdown, dust ingress or liquids; it is not a candidate for exposed or wet-process locations without an external enclosure.

Electrically this is the integrated-controller variant. It runs from 24 VDC, draws 6.2 W, and carries the iBlueDrive driver inside the housing through a 3-pin aerial connector, so no separate strobe controller is required. iBlueDrive lets the same unit run continuous, dimmed or strobed, and accepts an NPN, PNP or TTL trigger; out of the box it pulses at 47 pulses per second and is configurable up to 5000 pulses per second, which is what allows it to fire in step with a camera exposure on a moving line. For a fixed inspection where motion is slow or absent, continuous mode is the simplest setup; where parts are indexing or moving, the trigger input is wired to the camera or PLC strobe output so each flash is synchronized to acquisition. The base SAX0505A platform also exists in a 2-pin continuous-only form, but the -525i ordered here is the iBlueDrive version that trigger-syncs directly without external drive electronics.

Best for

  • Reading laser-etched or stamped data-matrix and serial codes on polished metal and electronic components, where coaxial light makes the engraved marks read dark against a bright, reflection-free background for traceability.
  • OCR/OCV verification of date codes, lot numbers and printed text on glossy or metallic packaging and labels that would otherwise glare under angled lighting.
  • Surface defect inspection of flat reflective parts (machined metal, brushed or plated automotive components, glass-like coatings) to expose scratches, dents and tool marks as dark features.
  • AI-based defect inspection stations in electronics and metal finishing where consistent, shadow-free on-axis illumination over a roughly 50 x 50 mm field gives the model a repeatable, low-variance image.
  • Inline inspection on indexed or moving lines using the iBlueDrive strobe trigger to freeze motion in sync with the camera, for example checking solder, connector or print quality in automotive and electronics assembly.

Selection notes

  • Size the part to the field: the illuminated area is 52 x 50 mm, so on-axis uniformity is best within roughly that footprint. For larger parts, plan to tile, step the part, or move to a larger coaxial unit, as brightness falls off beyond the lit zone.
  • Match the camera optical path to the light. The camera must image through the beamsplitter window along the axis, so confirm lens working distance and the lens front diameter clear the entry aperture, and keep the optical axis perpendicular to the surface so reflections return into the lens.
  • Use the wavelength deliberately. Green 525 nm is a sound default for monochrome sensors; if you need more contrast on a specific colored substrate, the same body is available in 470, 630, 850 nm, RGB or white, and a matching band-pass filter on the lens will reject ambient light and improve repeatability.
  • Plan the trigger wiring around iBlueDrive. The 3-pin aerial connector carries 24 VDC plus the trigger; decide up front whether the application runs continuous, dimmed or strobed, and route an NPN/PNP/TTL signal from the camera or PLC for strobe. Note the 47 pulses/s factory default and reconfigure toward the 5000 pulses/s ceiling for fast lines.
  • Respect the IP40 rating. This is an enclosed-station light, protected against solids but not sealed against dust or liquid; for washdown, oily, or open environments add a protective enclosure or choose a higher-IP fixture.
