iRAYPLE MH1620M 16mm C-Mount Area Scan Lens

MH1620M

The MH1620M is part of iRAYPLE's MH-M Series of fixed focal length lenses, featuring a 16mm focal length and a maximum aperture of F2.0. It covers up to 2/3" (Ø11.4mm) image sensors with high resolution suitable for 8MP cameras across the full field of view. The lens provides very low optical distortion of -0.27% and operates across a spectral range of 440nm to 680nm. Manual focus and iris controls are provided with a focus range from 0.2m to infinity, and the series includes 6 models covering 8mm to 50mm focal lengths.

Technical overview

The iRAYPLE MH1620M is a 16mm fixed focal length C-mount lens engineered specifically for high-resolution area scan cameras. Its 11.4mm image circle (2/3") fully covers sensors up to 2/3" format with an 8MP-class resolution rating across the entire field of view — meaning the lens resolves sufficient detail at the image periphery to match what an 8MP sensor can capture at center. This makes it a practical match for 8MP cameras in the 2/3" bracket, where many less capable lenses introduce resolution falloff toward the corners and rob the sensor of its full pixel count. The F2.0 maximum aperture provides a meaningful light-gathering advantage in applications where illumination budgets are tight or exposure times must be kept short to freeze motion, while stopping down to F16 gives installers flexibility to trade brightness for depth of field when inspecting three-dimensional parts with height variation.

From a geometric accuracy standpoint, the MH1620M's -0.27% distortion figure is the key performance metric for dimensional and gauging work. At this level, a feature located at the edge of a 2/3" sensor will be displaced by less than 0.3% of its true position, which in practice means software correction is rarely required for pass/fail gauging at moderate tolerances — the raw pixel coordinate is already a reliable proxy for physical position. This stands in contrast to wider-angle lenses in the same focal-length range where distortion exceeding 1–2% can introduce systematic measurement error that must be corrected in post-processing. The 440–680nm spectral range covers visible-light imaging and is compatible with red, green, blue, and broadband white LED illumination, though it does not extend to near-infrared, so NIR-based illumination schemes are outside its design envelope. Manual focus and iris controls with a minimum working distance of 200mm give the installer direct, lockable adjustment on the line.

The lens mounts via C-Mount, the dominant standard in the 2/3" area-scan segment, providing broad camera compatibility and a shallow mechanical interface that keeps system depth compact. At 44.93mm body length and 56g, the MH1620M is lightweight enough for multi-camera gantry arrays or pan-tilt fixtures where mass budget matters. The -20°C to 50°C operating range is wider than a typical office-grade optic, supporting deployment in refrigerated logistics, outdoor enclosures, and mildly elevated ambient environments such as near packaging lines or industrial ovens (provided the lens is not directly in the heat path). The 16mm focal length on a 2/3" sensor produces a field of view of roughly 31° horizontal on a standard 4:3 aspect sensor, which at a working distance of 300–500mm yields inspection fields of approximately 165–275mm wide — a practical sweet spot for circuit board, label, and small-part inspection cells.

Best for

  • Surface inspection and defect detection on PCBs and SMT assemblies where 8MP resolution is needed to resolve fine solder bridging, component misalignment, or marking defects within a 150–275mm field at 300–500mm working distance
  • Dimensional gauging of small-to-medium industrial parts (machined metal, molded plastic, stamped sheet) where the -0.27% distortion supports reliable edge-position measurements without mandatory software correction
  • Packaging and label inspection tasks including OCR, barcode reading, and print-quality verification on flat label surfaces in the 150–275mm field range
  • Pharmaceutical blister-pack, vial, and capsule inspection lines where high pixel count ensures character legibility and color-coded cap/seal verification under broadband visible LED illumination
  • Electronics and semiconductor tray or wafer-carrier inspection on fixed stations where a lightweight, thermally stable lens in a compact C-mount body fits space-constrained multi-camera rigs

Selection notes

  • Sensor format compatibility: the 11.4mm image circle covers 2/3" sensors but will vignette if used on cameras with larger sensors (e.g., 1" or 4/3"). Verify your camera's sensor size before purchasing — this lens is not suitable above 2/3" format.
  • Resolution matching: the lens is rated to 8MP across the full field on a 2/3" sensor. If paired with a lower-resolution camera (e.g., 5MP or 2MP), the optical resolution is not the limiting factor. Pairing with a sensor exceeding 8MP on 2/3" format may result in peripheral softness limiting effective resolution.
  • Aperture and depth of field trade-off: at F2.0 the lens maximises light throughput, beneficial for short strobe exposures or low-light scenes, but depth of field is shallow. For parts with significant height variation (>5–10mm), stopping down to F8–F11 is advisable, which will require brighter or longer-duration illumination.
  • NIR incompatibility: the 440–680nm spectral range stops at the red end of visible light. If your application requires near-infrared illumination (750nm, 850nm, or 940nm LED ring lights) for contrast enhancement on plastics, silicon, or surface-marked metals, a different lens with extended NIR transmission is needed.
  • Minimum working distance of 200mm: the lens cannot focus closer than 200mm object-to-front-element distance. For very small parts requiring high magnification ratios at standard working distances, a macro lens or extension tubes should be considered instead.
