Omron / Sentech FLV-CL60 Coaxial Light

FLV-CL60

The FLV-CL60 is a half-mirror coaxial illuminator with a 51 x 52 mm emitting surface, a 58 x 104 mm body and a 60.5 mm height, weighing approximately 380 g and built around a thermal aluminum-alloy case with an internal diffusion plate for uniform illumination. It is offered in five emitting colors (W/R/B/IR/UV) whose power consumption is 10.4 W white, 5.7 W red, 10.4 W blue, 3.9 W infrared and 3.0 W ultraviolet, with typical LED peak wavelengths of 460 nm blue, 635 nm red, 850 nm IR and 385 nm UV. The unit has a fixed 0.8 m cable that plugs into an Omron FLV lighting controller (FLV-TCC or FLV-ATC series), which supplies the 24 VDC drive, so a controller is required for operation. It is classified Risk Group 1 under IEC 62471 and is aimed at scratch/damage inspection, BGA and wafer inspection, and reading of laser-marked characters and 2D DPM codes.

Technical overview

The FLV-CL60 is a coaxial (on-axis) illuminator that uses a half-mirror structure: LEDs fire sideways through an internal diffusion plate onto a 45-degree beam splitter, which redirects the light down the same optical axis the camera looks along. The practical consequence is that the camera sees diffuse, perpendicular illumination as if it were looking straight down a flashlight beam. On a flat, specular surface, that surface acts like a mirror and bounces the light straight back, rendering it bright and uniform, while any feature that breaks the specular plane (a scratch, a dent, an engraved or laser-marked character, an etched 2D code) scatters light away from the lens and reads as dark. This dark-on-bright contrast on mirror-like parts is exactly what coaxial geometry is for, and it is why this unit is positioned for highly reflective targets where ringlights or bar lights would produce glare hotspots. The 51 x 52 mm emitting surface defines the usable bright field, so the part feature under inspection should sit comfortably inside that footprint at the chosen working distance.

The unit is offered in five emitting colors selected at order time (White, plus Red 635 nm, Blue 460 nm, IR 850 nm, UV 385 nm), and the choice of color is a real imaging decision rather than a cosmetic one. Shorter wavelengths such as the 460 nm blue and the 385 nm UV scatter more aggressively off fine surface texture, which sharpens the contrast of shallow scratches and fine laser marks; the longer 635 nm red and 850 nm IR are less sensitive to that fine texture, useful when you want to suppress nuisance surface detail. Power consumption tracks the color and the drive efficiency: 10.4 W for White and Blue, 5.7 W for Red, 3.9 W for IR and 3.0 W for UV. Because the color is fixed per part number, the wavelength has to be matched to the defect physics and to the camera's spectral sensitivity before purchase rather than tuned later in software.

This is a controller-driven light, not a self-powered fixture. It terminates in a fixed 0.8 m cable that plugs into an Omron FLV lighting controller (FLV-TCC or FLV-ATC series), and that controller supplies the 24 VDC drive, sets brightness, and provides the strobe/overdrive timing. The light mode is continuous by default but becomes strobe-capable through the controller, which matters for any moving-line application where you need to freeze motion with a short, bright pulse synchronized to the camera trigger. Mechanically it is a compact, serviceable block: a 58 x 104 mm body, 60.5 mm tall, weighing about 380 g, built in a thermal aluminum-alloy case that doubles as a heatsink to stabilize LED output. It carries an IEC 62471 Risk Group 1 photobiological classification. The integrator should budget for the controller as a mandatory companion item, plan rigid mounting that keeps the half-mirror square to both the camera axis and the part, and account for the 380 g mass and the fixed short cable when laying out the camera bracket.

Best for

  • Scratch and surface-damage inspection on mirror-like or highly polished parts, where coaxial dark-on-bright contrast exposes defects that glare-prone ringlights would hide
  • Reading laser-marked characters and engraved text (OCR/OCV) on shiny metal and plastic, where on-axis light makes the marks read dark against a bright background
  • Inspection and decoding of 2D Direct Part Mark (DPM) codes etched or laser-marked into reflective surfaces
  • BGA, wafer, and semiconductor surface inspection on flat specular targets that fit within the 51 x 52 mm emitting area
  • Defect and presence checks on battery, electronics, and automotive components with bright machined or coated finishes

Selection notes

  • A controller is mandatory: the FLV-CL60 has no onboard driver and must be paired with an Omron FLV lighting controller (FLV-TCC or FLV-ATC), which supplies the 24 VDC, sets brightness, and enables strobe/overdrive. Budget and panel space for it from the start.
  • Emitting color is fixed at the part number (W/R/B/IR/UV), so the wavelength must be matched to the defect type and the camera's spectral response before ordering; UV 385 nm and Blue 460 nm sharpen fine surface contrast while Red 635 nm and IR 850 nm suppress nuisance texture. A monochrome camera is typically preferred for the non-white variants.
  • Coaxial geometry only delivers its dark-on-bright advantage on flat, specular surfaces normal to the optical axis; on matte, curved, or tilted parts the on-axis bright field collapses, so confirm the target is mirror-like and square before designing it in.
  • Size the optics so the feature of interest stays within the 51 x 52 mm emitting surface at the working distance; the bright field cannot be larger than that footprint.
  • Plan mechanically for an approximately 380 g, 58 x 104 x 60.5 mm aluminum block on a fixed 0.8 m cable: the mount must hold the half-mirror square to the camera and part, and the short cable constrains how far the controller can sit from the camera station.
