Omron / Sentech FLV-FX100 Edge Type Coaxial Light

FLV-FX100

The FLV-FX100 is an edge-type coaxial light from Omron's FLV vision-lighting family that combines diffuse (shadowless) and coaxial illumination in a lightweight, low-profile 10 mm-thick body so it fits in narrow inspection spaces. It is available in white (FLV-FX100W, 3.7 W), red (FLV-FX100R, 1.9 W, peak 625 nm) and blue (FLV-FX100B, 3.7 W, peak 460 nm) variants using LED sources rated Risk Group 1 (IEC 62471). The unit has no standalone power input and must be driven by a dedicated Omron lighting controller (FLV-TCC4/-TCC1/-TCC3HB or FLV-ATC1024) via its integrated 0.8 m lighting-connector cable. The housing is aluminum/PMMA, rated IP20, weighs approximately 180 g, and operates from 0 to +50 degrees C.

Technical overview

The FLV-FX100 is an edge-type coaxial LED light, meaning its LED emitters are arranged at the edge of a thin light guide rather than directly above the part, so the illumination is turned to travel coaxially with the camera's optical axis. The result is on-axis, diffuse (shadowless) light delivered through a 60 x 60 mm emitting surface, while the camera looks straight down through that same surface. This geometry is what makes coaxial lighting valuable: it floods flat, specular, or mirror-like surfaces with even light that returns to the sensor only where the surface is smooth and perpendicular, so any scratch, dent, engraving, etch, or printed mark that tilts the surface scatters light away and shows up as a dark feature against a bright field. The high-uniformity diffuse emission listed in the specs reinforces this even-field behavior across the whole 60 x 60 mm window.

Mechanically the unit is built around fitting into tight inspection cells. The aluminum and PMMA housing measures just 100 x 100 x 10 mm and weighs about 180 g, and that 10 mm thickness is the headline number: a conventional in-line coaxial illuminator adds a tall cube above the part, whereas this edge-type design lets you slip on-axis light into a narrow gap between a moving camera, a fixed tool, or a low-clearance conveyor. The trade-off to plan for is environmental protection. The light is rated IP20 to IEC 60529, so it is intended for clean, dry, enclosed machine-vision stations, not for washdown, dusty, or coolant-spray locations. The operating range of 0 to +50 C (storage -15 to +60 C) is typical for an electronics-cabinet or guarded inspection enclosure rather than an open foundry floor.

This is a controller-driven head, not a self-powered lamp. It has no supply-voltage input of its own; instead it connects through an integrated 0.8 m, 3.5 mm-diameter cable with a lighting connector and must be driven by a dedicated Omron FLV controller (FLV-TCC4, FLV-TCC1, FLV-TCC3HB, or FLV-ATC1024). That controller is what sets continuous versus strobe operation and synchronizes the light to the camera trigger, so the FX100 is designed to live inside a coordinated FLV lighting system rather than be wired straight to a 24 V rail. Wavelength is selected by part number: white (FLV-FX100W, 3.7 W) for general defect and color-neutral inspection, red (FLV-FX100R, 1.9 W, peak typ. 625 nm) to lift contrast on red-receptive materials and reduce power draw, and blue (FLV-FX100B, 3.7 W, peak typ. 460 nm) for the shorter-wavelength, finer-detail and higher-contrast work that blue light favors. All variants use LED sources rated Risk Group 1 under IEC 62471, so they fall in the low photobiological-risk class for the emitter type.

Best for

  • On-axis surface inspection of flat specular parts such as polished metal, glass, semiconductor wafers, and PCB pads, where the coaxial diffuse field reveals scratches, dents, and contamination as dark defects against a bright background
  • Reading engraved, etched, laser-marked, or embossed traceability codes and characters on shiny surfaces, where on-axis light flattens glare so OCR/OCV and 2D-code algorithms see clean contrast
  • Low-clearance inspection stations where the 10 mm-thick edge-type body must fit into a narrow gap that a tall conventional coaxial illuminator cannot occupy
  • Wavelength-tuned contrast tasks: choosing the blue (460 nm) variant for fine detail and higher contrast, the red (625 nm) variant for red-receptive materials with lower 1.9 W draw, or white for general color-neutral inspection
  • Strobed, camera-synchronized inspection on indexing or moving lines, using an FLV controller to drive the light in strobe mode locked to the camera trigger

Selection notes

  • A dedicated Omron FLV controller is mandatory and must be budgeted: the head has no power input and only connects via its integrated 0.8 m lighting-connector cable to an FLV-TCC4, FLV-TCC1, FLV-TCC3HB, or FLV-ATC1024. Confirm controller channel count and strobe capability for your application before specifying the head.
  • Field-of-view fit: the emitting surface is 60 x 60 mm, so the part feature under inspection should sit comfortably within that window. For larger parts you must either step-and-repeat or select a larger coaxial light.
  • Plan the cable run early. The integrated cable is fixed at 0.8 m with a 3.5 mm diameter and a lighting connector, so the controller must be located within that reach or an approved extension path defined when designing the cell.
  • Environment matters: the IP20 rating limits this light to clean, dry, enclosed stations. Avoid washdown, coolant-spray, or dusty zones, and keep the ambient within the 0 to +50 C operating window.
  • Lock the wavelength choice to the inspection physics, not just availability: white (3.7 W), red (625 nm, 1.9 W), and blue (460 nm, 3.7 W) are separate part numbers (W/R/B), so the spectral decision is made at order time and cannot be changed in the field.
