The Basler Standard Light Back-50x100 is a diffuse LED backlight: a 50 mm x 100 mm light-emitting surface designed to sit behind the part so the camera sees a bright, even field interrupted only by the object's silhouette. Backlighting is the geometry of choice when you care about an outline rather than a surface texture. Because the emission is diffuse (not directional), the panel washes out surface detail and reflections and instead delivers maximum edge contrast at the object boundary, which is exactly what dimensional gauging, presence/absence and outline-defect algorithms want to threshold against. The lit area dictates the maximum part footprint you can profile in a single view: parts up to roughly 50 x 100 mm fit fully within the field, and the long-and-narrow aspect ratio suits elongated components, gaps and web-like features.
Wavelength is a deliberate selection here because the unit ships in four color SKUs that share one body: White (5000 K, order no. 2200000725), Red (625 nm typ.), Blue (465 nm typ., order no. 2200000798) and IR (850 nm typ., order no. 2200000860). With a backlight the wavelength does not color the part, it sets the silhouette's crispness and how the camera and any optical filter respond. Blue's shorter wavelength gives the tightest edge definition for fine measurement; Red is a robust general-purpose choice; IR at 850 nm is monochrome-camera and band-pass-filter friendly, letting you reject ambient light for stable thresholds; White suits color cameras or mixed work. Pick the variant to match the sensor (mono vs. color) and any filter on the lens, since all four are mechanically and electrically identical.
Electrically the panel runs on 24 VDC (+/-5%) at 6 W and offers two drive paths without redesign. It can be current-controlled from a Basler Lighting Controller, or voltage-controlled standalone with no external controller, running either continuous or triggered with pulse widths from 100 us to infinite. That flexibility lets a simple installation wire it straight to a 24 V rail for continuous on, while a higher-throughput line can strobe it in sync with the camera trigger to freeze motion and extend LED life. Connection is an M8 4-pin male connector; the housing is 100 x 120 x 12 mm, weighs 250 g and is rated IP54 for protected indoor/light-splash environments. The 12 mm profile keeps it compact behind a conveyor or fixture, and the specified operating range of 10 C to 30 C points to a climate-controlled production setting rather than a hot or outdoor one.
Best for
Dimensional measurement and outline gauging of parts up to ~50 x 100 mm, where the diffuse backlight produces a high-contrast silhouette for sub-pixel edge thresholding
Presence/absence and completeness checks on packaging, where a part either breaks the bright field or does not
Profile and outline defect detection on stamped, molded or machined components against a uniform backlit field
IR-based inspection (850 nm variant) paired with a monochrome camera and band-pass filter to suppress ambient light for stable, repeatable thresholds
Strobed silhouette capture on moving lines, triggering the backlight with pulse widths from 100 us in sync with the camera to freeze motion
Selection notes
Confirm the part fits the 50 x 100 mm emitting area in a single view; the long, narrow aspect ratio favors elongated parts, and larger objects need a bigger backlight or a stitched/multi-camera setup
Choose the wavelength SKU to match your camera and filter: Blue (465 nm) for the sharpest edges in fine measurement, IR (850 nm) for mono cameras with a band-pass filter to reject ambient, Red (625 nm) as a general default, White (5000 K) for color work
Decide the drive scheme up front: voltage-controlled standalone is the simplest wiring to a 24 VDC rail, while current-controlled with a Basler Lighting Controller gives tighter intensity control and clean strobing
Plan for triggered operation on fast lines; the 100 us to infinite pulse-width range lets you strobe in sync with the camera to freeze motion and extend LED life, but the controller/IO must supply the trigger
Verify the environment suits the IP54 rating and the 10 C to 30 C operating window; this is a protected, climate-controlled fit, not a washdown or high-temperature one. Budget for the 24 VDC (+/-5%) 6 W supply and the M8 4-pin male connector

Applications this camera is commonly selected for. Open one to see the full recommended hardware and approach.
Get a first image quickly with the pylon Viewer, then move into the pylon SDK for your application. These cameras are GenICam/GenTL-compliant, so any compliant vision software can drive them as well.
Download and install the pylon Camera Software Suite for your OS from Basler. This provides the pylon Viewer, the GenTL transport-layer producers and the pylon SDK (C/C++/.NET/Python). On Windows the installer adds the needed drivers; on Linux follow the included setup notes for USB and network permissions.
2. Connect the camera and check the link
Cable the camera to its matching interface: GigE Vision to a GigE port (use a quality cable and, ideally, a dedicated NIC with jumbo frames enabled), USB3 Vision to a USB 3.x port with the supplied cable, or CoaXPress to the frame grabber. Provide power where required (PoE, USB bus power, or PoCXP). Open the pylon Viewer and confirm the camera appears in the device list; for GigE, make sure the camera and NIC are on the same subnet.
3. Grab a first image and set exposure, gain and pixel format
Select the camera in the pylon Viewer and start a continuous grab. Adjust exposure time and gain until the image is well exposed (avoid clipped highlights), set the pixel format (e.g. Mono8 or a Bayer/RGB format), and focus the lens. Use a test pattern if the lens or scene is not ready yet.
4. Configure triggering and acquisition
Decide between free-run and triggered acquisition. For synchronized capture, set the trigger source (software or a hardware line on the I/O connector), trigger mode and any debounce or exposure mode, then verify timing. Note the parameter names you change in the Viewer feature tree, as you will reuse them in code.
5. Move to the SDK or a GenICam-compliant library
Recreate your settings in code with the pylon SDK (C, C++, .NET or Python) to open the device, apply the same features and pull frames into your pipeline; pylon vTools and pylon AI can add processing blocks. Because the cameras are GenICam/GenTL standard, third-party vision libraries work too. Once the image stream is stable, you can route frames to a deep-learning inspection such as Rosepetal for automated defect detection.
Frequently asked questions
The light-emitting surface is 50 mm x 100 mm, so parts up to roughly that footprint fit fully within the backlit field in a single view. The elongated aspect ratio suits long, narrow components; larger parts require a bigger backlight or multiple views.
It is offered in four variants: White (5000 K), Red (625 nm), Blue (465 nm) and IR (850 nm). For a backlight the wavelength sets silhouette crispness and sensor/filter compatibility: Blue gives the tightest edges, IR pairs with a mono camera and band-pass filter to reject ambient light, Red is a general-purpose choice, and White suits color cameras. All four share the same body and electrical interface.
No, a controller is optional. The panel can be current-controlled from a Basler Lighting Controller, or voltage-controlled standalone with no external controller. Standalone supports both continuous and triggered operation.
Yes. It supports triggered operation with pulse widths from 100 us up to infinite, so you can strobe it in sync with the camera trigger to freeze motion, then run continuous where strobing is not needed.
It runs on 24 VDC (+/-5%) and draws 6 W. The electrical connection is an M8 male 4-pin connector. The housing is 100 x 120 x 12 mm, weighs 250 g, is rated IP54, and is specified for a 10 C to 30 C operating range.
