BKC0806A Cylindrical Backlight 360°

BKC0806A

The BKC0806A is a cylindrical backlight with an overall body of Ø60×100mm and an active illuminated surface of Ø60×60mm, operating at 24VDC. It emits diffuse light radially across its full 360-degree cylindrical surface, making it ideal for inspecting turntables, carousels, or hollow objects from multiple angles simultaneously. Available in Blue (470nm), Green (525nm), Red (630nm), IR (850nm), and White wavelengths, it supports continuous (Type C), strobe (Type S), and iBlueDrive intelligent (Type i) operating modes. The housing is anodized aluminium rated IP40 with a weight of 260g.

Technical overview

The BKC0806A is a cylindrical LED backlight with a 360-degree radial emission geometry — a fundamentally different form factor from flat backlights. Its active illuminated surface measures Ø60 × 60 mm and is built into an overall body of Ø60 × 100 mm, making it compact enough to integrate inside or around objects on a rotating fixture. The diffuser ensures homogeneous light distribution across the entire cylindrical surface simultaneously, so a camera positioned at any angle relative to the fixture receives consistent backlighting without shadowing artefacts from the LED array itself. At 24 VDC the unit draws between 5.3 W (Green) and 11 W (Blue) in continuous mode, rising to 42–48 W in strobe bursts — figures that matter when sizing power supplies for multi-light cells.

Three operating modes make the BKC0806A adaptable to different camera and controller setups. Type C (continuous) runs directly from 24 VDC with no additional hardware, suited to slow lines or when the exposure itself gates the image. Type S (strobe) uses the same 2P chassis connector and accepts an external trigger from a vision controller or PLC for pulsed operation, reaching the higher peak intensities needed to freeze motion on high-speed conveyors. Type i uses the iBlueDrive inline driver on a 3P aerial connector, adding intelligent intensity management and enabling synchronised multi-light sequencing. Six wavelength options — 365 nm UV, 470 nm Blue, 525 nm Green, 630 nm Red, 850 nm IR, and White — let engineers choose the wavelength that maximises contrast for a specific material: UV for latent markings or adhesive presence, IR to penetrate coloured plastics or suppress background colour variation, and visible wavelengths for standard silhouette or surface work.

The housing is anodized aluminium rated IP40, weighing 260 g — appropriate for controlled factory environments free from coolant spray or heavy washdown, such as electronics assembly or pharmaceutical packaging lines. The operating temperature range of 0–40 °C covers typical indoor industrial cells. Because no external controller is required for continuous-mode operation, installation can be as straightforward as a 24 VDC tap from an existing rail; strobe and iBlueDrive modes add a connector and driver but keep the wiring compact. The cylindrical geometry is the defining selection criterion: it is the correct tool when the object — a pipe fitting, a capped tube, a circular deposit, or a part on a rotating carousel — must be silhouetted or transilluminated uniformly from all radial directions at once, something no flat backlight can replicate.

Best for

  • Inspecting the rim and wall of cylindrical containers — bottles, aerosol cans, threaded pipe fittings — where a flat backlight would leave circumferential shadow gaps that break the silhouette profile used for dimensional checks.
  • Turntable or carousel inspection stations where the part rotates past a fixed camera and consistent edge illumination at every angular position is required without mechanically re-indexing the light source.
  • Packaging lines using cylindrical or round-section containers where label presence, cap seating, or neck geometry must be checked from the side using silhouette-mode imaging with uniform background.
  • Multi-wavelength material discrimination on rotating parts — selecting IR at 850 nm to suppress colour variation in coloured caps, or UV at 365 nm to detect latent adhesive or invisible markings on circular components.
  • Hollow object inspection — pipes, boxes, or deposits — where simultaneous 360-degree radial illumination eliminates the need to reposition the light source for multiple camera angles.

Selection notes

  • IP40 protection is adequate for clean, dry assembly environments but not for cells with cutting fluid mist, washdown, or condensation risk — verify the enclosure environment before specifying, and consider a higher-IP alternative if liquid ingress is possible.
  • Strobe mode power consumption jumps to 42–48 W from the 5.3–11 W continuous figures; ensure the 24 VDC rail (±3% tolerance for Type C/S, ±8% for Type i iBlueDrive) can supply peak current without voltage sag that would affect other lights or sensors sharing the same rail.
  • The active cylindrical surface is Ø60 × 60 mm — objects taller than 60 mm will extend beyond the illuminated band and receive only partial backlight coverage; confirm the inspection region of the part fits within this height.
  • Wavelength choice changes connector and operating-mode behaviour: all six wavelengths are available, but confirm with DCM Sistemes which wavelength variants ship with Type i iBlueDrive versus Type C/S only, as power figures in the specs are listed per wavelength and strobe wattage differs by colour.
  • The unit does not require an external controller for Type C continuous mode, simplifying integration, but Type i iBlueDrive requires the dedicated inline driver (3P aerial connector) for intelligent strobe and intensity control — budget and cable-route accordingly.
