ALD0606A Direct Ringlight

ALD0606A

The ALD0606A is a direct (non-diffuse) radial LED ringlight designed to be mounted on the camera axis, delivering high-intensity frontal illumination that emphasises shadows, textures, and surface edges. It measures Ø73×21mm with an inner aperture of 40mm, weighs 145g, and is rated IP40 for industrial environments. The light operates at 24VDC and is available in eight wavelengths (365, 400, 470, 525, 630, 850nm, RGB, and white) across four operating modes: Continuous, Powered (overdrive), Strobe, and DCM's intelligent iBlueDrive mode. Connection uses a 2P chassis-mounted male connector for standard types (VCB power cable required, not included) or a 3P 150mm aerial connector for the iBlueDrive variant.

Technical overview

The ALD0606A is a direct (non-diffuse) radial LED ringlight measuring 73 mm outer diameter by 21 mm depth, with a 40 mm inner aperture and a weight of just 145 g. Direct radial emission means the LEDs fire on-axis from the ring toward the target without any diffusing optic in the light path, producing hard, directed illumination. This geometry creates pronounced shadow relief along edges, scratches, engraved text, and surface texture features — exactly the contrast mechanism that makes edges and raised or recessed detail pop against a background. Because the light travels essentially coaxially with the camera, specular reflections from flat polished areas return directly into the lens, which can be used deliberately to saturate bright background zones and make dark or matt features stand out. The recommended working distance is greater than 100 mm; at shorter distances the ring's inner aperture constrains which lens focal lengths clear the mount, so the 40 mm aperture and the >100 mm RWD should be matched to the lens selection early in the optical design.

Eight wavelength options — 365 nm (UV-), 400 nm (UV), 470 nm (blue), 525 nm (green), 630 nm (red), 850 nm (IR), RGB, and white — give integrators wide latitude to select the spectral band that maximises contrast for a specific material. UV wavelengths (365/400 nm) are used with bandpass filters to excite fluorescent marks, adhesive traces, or UV-reactive inks invisible under visible illumination. Red (630 nm) and IR (850 nm) options penetrate surface coatings or slight translucency and are common for reading printed codes through protective films. Green (525 nm) aligns with peak silicon photodetector sensitivity and suits high-speed monochrome cameras. RGB and white variants allow colour-based segmentation or human-readable overlay capture without changing hardware. Four operating modes extend flexibility further: Continuous mode draws 2.0–3.5 W at 24 VDC ±3% with no external controller needed; Powered/overdrive mode increases drive current beyond the continuous rating for higher peak intensity; Strobe mode requires a compatible DCM VST or VSC series strobe controller and enables short high-intensity pulses that freeze motion and improve signal-to-noise at short camera integration times; and iBlueDrive, DCM's intelligent control variant, uses a 3-pin 150 mm aerial connector and an optional iBlueDrive box for automatic continuous/strobe switching.

Electrically the light runs on 24 VDC ±3% in standard modes (±8% in iBlueDrive), which is compatible with the 24 V rails common in PLC and machine-vision controller cabinets without a dedicated power supply. Continuous mode requires only the VCB power cable (sold separately) and no driver hardware, the lowest-cost integration path. IP40 protection is appropriate for clean, dry industrial environments such as electronics assembly lines, pharmaceutical inspection stations, and semiconductor handling cells, but excludes applications with coolant spray, wash-down cycles, or heavy particulate. The 2P chassis connector (C/P/S variants) and the 3P aerial pigtail (iBlueDrive variant) are mutually exclusive at order time, so the operating mode strategy — whether strobe control will be centralised in a VST/VSC controller or delegated to the iBlueDrive box — must be fixed before procurement.

Best for

  • Surface texture and micro-defect detection on metal or plastic parts, where the direct radial geometry creates shadow contrast across scratches, dents, burrs, and mold lines at working distances above 100 mm.
  • 1D/2D barcode and DPM code reading, where a red (630 nm) or IR (850 nm) variant in strobe mode provides intense short-pulse illumination that freezes part motion on a conveyor and maximises contrast between code cells and background.
  • OCR and OCV on printed labels, embossed markings, or laser-etched characters, where the on-axis hard light emphasises the edge gradient of each character stroke.
  • UV fluorescence inspection of adhesive beads, UV-curable coatings, or security marks using the 365 nm (UV-) or 400 nm (UV) wavelength variant with a bandpass emission filter on the camera lens — the ringlight geometry ensures uniform UV dose around the field of view.
  • Packaging and electronics assembly inspection in clean-room or controlled environments (IP40) where a lightweight 145 g ringlight needs to be integrated directly onto a camera-lens stack without adding significant inertia to a gantry or robot end-effector.

Selection notes

  • Connector and mode variant must be chosen at order time: the 2P chassis connector serves Continuous, Powered, and Strobe modes, while the iBlueDrive variant ships with a 3P aerial pigtail. Specify the operating mode strategy before ordering, as the connectors are not interchangeable in the field.
  • Strobe mode requires an external DCM VST or VSC series strobe controller — this is not included and must be budgeted and sourced separately. Continuous mode needs only the VCB power cable (also not included), making it the lowest-BOM integration path for static or slow-moving scenes.
  • The 40 mm inner aperture at >100 mm working distance limits the usable lens focal lengths: short focal-length lenses with large front elements may physically interfere with or vignette inside the ring aperture. Confirm lens front diameter and working distance against the 40 mm bore before finalising the optical stack.
  • IP40 rating protects against solid particles larger than 1 mm with no liquid ingress protection. Do not specify this light for wash-down, coolant-mist, or outdoor environments. For those conditions a higher IP-rated DCM variant should be evaluated.
  • Wavelength selection is permanent per unit — the light is ordered as a specific wavelength SKU. If multi-spectral inspection is required (e.g., alternating red/IR), two separate ringlights on a switcher or a strobe controller with channel switching must be planned into the system architecture.
