DCM Sistemes PLA1013A High Power Linear Light Projector

PLA1013A

The PLA1013A is a 130mm high-power linear light projector from DCM Sistemes' PLA series, featuring a 130x10mm active emission surface and available in seven standard wavelengths (365nm UV through 850nm IR plus white). It integrates the iBlueDrive controller directly in the housing, supporting continuous, powered, and strobe modes (up to 5000 pps) without an external driver. Four emission angles are selectable: narrow 18°, medium 21° (default), wide 40°, and diffuse. Power consumption in powered mode ranges from 12W (630nm) to 24W (W00, 470nm, 850nm) at 24VDC, with strobe overdrive doubling these values.

Technical overview

The PLA1013A is a high-power linear bar light projector built around a 130x10 mm active emission surface housed in a compact 130x40x16 mm anodized aluminium body weighing just 145 g. Its most distinctive design decision is the integration of DCM Sistemes' iBlueDrive strobe controller directly inside the housing, eliminating the need for any external driver unit. This single-cable, three-pin aerial connector approach — PIN1 +24VDC, PIN2 0V, PIN3 Control — simplifies panel wiring substantially: the installer runs one 24VDC supply rail and a single NPN, PNP, or TTL trigger line from the vision controller or PLC, and the light handles all current regulation and strobe timing internally, supporting up to 5000 pulses per second in overdrive mode.

Wavelength flexibility is a core strength of the PLA series. The PLA1013A ships in seven standard variants spanning 365 nm near-UV through white, 400 nm UV, 470 nm blue, 525 nm green, 630 nm red, and 850 nm near-IR, with 455 nm, 730 nm, and 940 nm available on request. This breadth lets the same mechanical form factor serve radically different imaging tasks: UV variants at 365–400 nm excite fluorescent features such as adhesive beads, security marks, or biological contamination; 470–525 nm blue-green variants maximise contrast on printed codes, surface texture, and paper; 630 nm red is the standard choice for monochrome cameras where silicon sensitivity peaks; and 850 nm IR passes through tinted packaging films or illuminates retro-reflective targets while remaining invisible to human operators. Power consumption in powered mode reaches 24 W for the white, 470 nm, and 850 nm variants and 12 W for 630 nm, with strobe overdrive doubling the peak power to increase photon output during very short exposures — a meaningful advantage when the camera must freeze fast-moving parts on a conveyor without motion blur.

Emission angle selection is made at ordering time via a model suffix: narrow 18° (/AN) for tight, high-intensity projection onto a small band; medium 21° (/AM, the default) as an all-round choice; wide 40° (/AW) when the working distance is short or the field of view is broad; and a diffuse modifier (/AD) for specular or reflective surfaces where direct illumination would produce hot-spots. The minimum recommended working distance is 50 mm, reflecting the high surface radiance of a powered-mode LED array in this compact emitter footprint. The IP40 rating is appropriate for clean or semi-clean indoor environments but not for wash-down or heavily particulate areas. Operating temperature is specified at 0–40 °C, consistent with a controlled factory floor rather than harsh outdoor deployment. At 145 g on a 130 mm bar body, the unit mounts easily on standard DIN-rail brackets or custom extrusion profiles without adding significant moment arm to moving axes.

Best for

  • Inspecting print quality, barcodes, 2D matrix codes, and OCR fields on flat substrates — the narrow emission angle variants deliver a concentrated bright band that maximises contrast for camera-based decode and grading systems.
  • Surface defect detection on metal stampings, machined parts, or painted panels — grazing or low-angle illumination using the narrow 18° variant picks out scratches, dents, and edge burrs as bright highlights against a dark background, while 630 nm or white wavelengths suit monochrome cameras with high responsivity.
  • Fluorescence-based inspection tasks such as verifying adhesive presence, detecting UV-reactive security inks, or identifying biological contaminants — the 365 nm and 400 nm UV variants excite fluorescent emission without the need for a separate UV source or external driver.
  • Packaging line inspection where the integrated iBlueDrive eliminates a separate controller cabinet and allows the light to be triggered directly from the conveyor encoder or PLC NPN output — particularly relevant for high-throughput lines running at up to 5000 trigger pulses per second.
  • Robot-guided pick-and-place or assembly verification on production cells where cable management is constrained — the single three-pin connector and self-contained driver reduce routing complexity on a moving arm or gantry bracket compared to a light plus separate driver combination.

Selection notes

  • Specify the wavelength variant before ordering: wavelength is fixed at manufacture. Match wavelength to your camera sensor (monochrome silicon cameras respond well to 630 nm and 850 nm), the spectral response of the features you need to reveal (fluorescent marks need UV), and any required invisibility to operators (850 nm or 940 nm IR variants).
  • Choose the emission angle suffix based on your working-distance-to-field ratio. The default medium 21° (/AM) works well at moderate working distances of 100–300 mm. If the target surface is specular or mirror-like, select the diffuse modifier /AD to spread illumination and suppress hot-spots; note this reduces peak irradiance compared to the directional variants.
  • Size the 24VDC supply for peak strobe power: the white, 470 nm, and 850 nm variants draw up to 24 W in powered mode and double that peak in strobe overdrive. On a multi-light panel supply, ensure the rail can sustain simultaneous overdrive pulses without voltage sag that would reduce light output.
  • The IP40 rating protects against solid objects greater than 1 mm but offers no moisture ingress protection. For applications near coolants, misting systems, or food-processing wash-downs, this fixture is unsuitable without additional enclosure; consider whether a higher IP-rated alternative is required before committing to the installation.
  • The 130 mm active emission length is matched to fields of view up to approximately that width at short working distances. If your field of view is significantly wider than 130 mm, evaluate whether you need multiple PLA1013A units arranged end-to-end, or a longer bar variant from the same PLA series, before finalising mounting geometry.
