DCM Sistemes PLD1802A Direct Linear Light Projector (Bar)

PLD1802A

The PLD1802A is the 180 mm model of DCM Sistemes' PLD series of direct linear (bar) light projectors, producing punctual directional illumination so that even small surface reliefs cast shadows for strong contrast. It is available in multiple monochromatic wavelengths (UV 365/400 nm, blue 470 nm, green 525 nm, red 630 nm, IR 850 nm) plus white and RGB, and in continuous (Type C), pulsed/powered (Type P), strobe (Type S) and iBlueDrive (Type i) drive variants. The unit runs on 24 VDC (+/-3%) through a 2-pin male chassis connector, with the iBlueDrive variant using a 3-pin aerial inline connector for trigger control. The black anodized aluminium housing is rated IP40 (IP43 when light falls vertically), weighs 150 g, and operates from 0 to 40 C; instantaneous consumption depends on wavelength and drive type (e.g. roughly 2.2-5.8 W in continuous mode, up to ~25 W in strobe).

Technical overview

The PLD1802A is the 180 mm member of DCM Sistemes' PLD series of direct linear (bar) light projectors. Its defining trait is geometry: a 180 x 16 mm active emitting surface mounted in a slim 201 x 20 x 24 mm black anodized aluminium housing that throws narrow, punctual, directional light rather than the soft wash of a diffuse panel. The spec sheet is explicit that there is no diffuser - this is a direct projector. That matters for the installer because the value of this fixture is grazing illumination: positioned at a low angle to the part, the directional beam rakes across the surface so that even shallow reliefs, scratches, fissures, embossing and texture cast their own shadows. The result is high local contrast precisely where a defect or a feature breaks the plane, which is why DCM lists this lamp for surface inspection, defect detection and OCR/OCV work, alongside dimensional measurement and line-scan applications.

Wavelength flexibility is the second design lever. The PLD1802A is offered in monochromatic UV (365 and 400 nm), blue (470 nm), green (525 nm), red (630 nm) and IR (850 nm), plus white and an RGB version. The installer picks the band to match the camera and the target: monochromatic light through a matched bandpass filter rejects ambient and sharpens edge contrast, longer wavelengths such as IR can change how surface coloration is rendered, and UV excites fluorescent markers or inks. The 180 mm long, narrow active strip is naturally suited to web, sheet and conveyor work, and the data explicitly lists line-scan vision among its applications: a bar this shape lays a bright line of grazing light across a moving product so a line-scan sensor can build a high-contrast image strip by strip. Pair it with white or RGB for color line-scan, or with a single monochromatic band for filtered mono work.

Driving and integration are straightforward but variant-dependent. The lamp runs on 24 VDC (+/-3%) and ships in four drive types: continuous (Type C), pulsed/powered (Type P), strobe (Type S) and iBlueDrive (Type i). The standard variants connect via a 2-pin male chassis connector (PIN1 +24 V, PIN2 0 V), and continuous use needs no external controller; the strobe variant draws far more instantaneous power - up to roughly 25 W versus about 2.2-5.8 W continuous depending on wavelength and drive type - and DCM recommends a VS-series strobe controller to overdrive and synchronize it to the camera trigger. The iBlueDrive variant instead uses a 3-pin aerial inline connector for trigger control. At 150 g it is light enough to mount on a small bracket or beside a line-scan camera, operates from 0 to 40 C (storage 0 to 60 C), and is rated IP40 (IP43 only when the light falls vertically), which positions it as an indoor, relatively clean-environment fixture rather than a washdown lamp.

Best for

  • Grazing-angle surface inspection of metal, electronics or molded parts to reveal scratches, dents, embossing, fissures and shallow texture defects through shadow contrast
  • Line-scan imaging of moving web, sheet or conveyor product, where the 180 mm narrow bar lays a bright line across the travel direction
  • Defect-detection and AI inspection setups that need strong local contrast on surface relief rather than a flat, even field
  • OCR/OCV reading of embossed, engraved or low-contrast date/lot codes where directional light makes characters stand out against the background
  • Filtered monochromatic inspection - choosing blue 470 nm, green 525 nm, red 630 nm or IR 850 nm with a matched camera filter to suppress ambient light and sharpen edges, or UV 365/400 nm for fluorescence

Selection notes

  • This is a direct projector with no diffuser, so its strength is grazing contrast: it must be angled low to the part to reveal surface relief, and it is not a soft, even-field diffuse panel - though DCM does also list it for dimensional measurement and line-scan work
  • Respect the recommended working distance of more than 50 mm and remember the active surface is only 180 x 16 mm: it covers a narrow strip, so for wider parts plan multiple bars or use it specifically as line/edge lighting rather than full-field area lighting
  • Choose the drive type up front - the standard variants (continuous Type C, pulsed Type P, strobe Type S) use the 2-pin 24 VDC chassis connector, while the iBlueDrive (Type i) variant uses a 3-pin aerial inline connector for trigger control; continuous needs no controller but strobe (Type S) needs a VS-series strobe controller
  • Size the 24 VDC supply for the chosen mode and wavelength: continuous draw is only about 2.2-5.8 W, but strobe operation can spike to roughly 25 W instantaneous, which changes both the power budget and the controller you specify
  • The IP40 rating (IP43 only with vertical light incidence) and 0-40 C operating range make this an indoor, clean-environment lamp - for wet, dusty or washdown lines or hot enclosures, plan protective housing or select a more sealed fixture
  • Match wavelength to the imaging goal and camera: monochromatic bands with a bandpass filter maximize contrast and ambient rejection, white/RGB suit color or general work, IR 850 nm changes how some surface coloration is rendered, and UV 365/400 nm targets fluorescent inks and markers
