PRL9802A Line Light Projector

PRL9802A

The PRL9802A is the largest fixed-size model in DCM Sistemes' PRL standard line light projector series, with a 981.5 × 15 mm active illuminated surface and 995 × 60 × 50 mm body. It delivers a high-intensity direct line of light at 0° emission angle, with a recommended working distance of up to 105 mm. Powered by 24V DC with 2P flying leads (300 mm cable), it is available in five wavelengths (470 nm blue, 525 nm green, 630 nm red, 850 nm IR, and white), consuming 65–125 W depending on the color. The unit operates in continuous mode only, weighs 4,600 g, and carries an IP40 protection rating.

Technical overview

The PRL9802A is DCM Sistemes' largest fixed-format line light projector, delivering a tightly defined 981.5 × 15 mm illuminated footprint from a 995 × 60 × 50 mm body. The 0° emission angle — no diffuser, direct narrow line — concentrates all available flux into a thin stripe that maps precisely onto the pixel rows of a line scan camera, maximising radiance at the sensor rather than spreading light wastefully across a wider cone. At the recommended working distance of up to 105 mm, that 15 mm cross-track width remains sufficiently narrow to act as a high-contrast darkfield or brightfield stripe depending on whether the camera views it at specular or oblique geometry. Power draw ranges from 65 W for the 850 nm IR variant up to 125 W for the 525 nm green, with blue, red, and white variants each drawing 105 W — figures that underscore the high LED drive levels needed to illuminate a nearly metre-long aperture at this intensity.

Wavelength selection is application-driven and must be committed at order time: 470 nm blue suits fluorescence suppression and polymer surface contrast; 525 nm green is the highest-intensity option and works well on many metallic and printed surfaces; 630 nm red is a classic choice for high-contrast imaging of organic or painted surfaces; 850 nm IR cuts through ambient factory light and excels on silicon and carbon-fibre substrates. White is available for multi-channel colour or broadband applications. The unit runs in continuous mode only — there is no strobe or overdrive variant — so illumination control is handled purely by camera exposure time. Power delivery is straightforward: a direct 24 V DC ±3% feed via 2P flying leads (300 mm, brown = +24 V, blue = 0 V), with no external light controller required, simplifying cabinet wiring on lines where strobing is not needed.

At 4,600 g and nearly a metre in length, the PRL9802A requires robust mechanical mounting along its full length to prevent sag that would compromise the uniformity of illumination across the scan width. The IP40 rating suits clean indoor factory environments but not wash-down or dusty cutting zones without additional enclosure protection. Thermal management is important given continuous dissipation up to 125 W: installers should ensure adequate airflow around the body and verify ambient temperature stays within the 0–40 °C operating range. For line scan installations scanning wide webs or panels, the 981.5 mm active length covers widths that would otherwise require two or more shorter bars spliced together, eliminating join lines in the illumination profile that would appear as periodic artefacts in the reconstructed image.

Best for

  • Wide-web line scan inspection — covering fabric, film, foil, or paper webs up to approximately 980 mm without bar-to-bar splicing artefacts.
  • Large flat-panel surface defect detection — darkfield or brightfield illumination of glass, metal sheet, or printed circuit board panels in automotive and electronics lines.
  • High-speed continuous printing inspection — bright, spectrally selective illumination of colour-printed packaging or labels at full press speeds where continuous mode and camera-gated exposure is preferred.
  • Metal strip and coil inspection in steel or aluminium processing where 850 nm IR or 630 nm red variants suppress scale oxidation colour variation and improve scratch/pit contrast.
  • Wide-format dimensional verification applications where a long, uniform reference line is required to check straightness, edge position, or width of extruded or rolled products.

Selection notes

  • Wavelength is factory-configured — select the variant (white, red 630 nm, green 525 nm, blue 470 nm, or IR 850 nm) that matches your surface and camera spectral sensitivity before ordering, as no field-swappable option exists.
  • The 105 mm maximum recommended working distance is a key constraint: mounting height relative to the product surface must be tightly controlled in the fixture design, and web flutter or part height variation will directly affect illumination intensity at the sensor.
  • Continuous-mode-only operation means the camera's electronic exposure time is the sole integration control; ensure your line scan camera supports exposure time adjustment short enough to freeze motion at the required line rate without relying on pulsed overdrive to boost peak intensity.
  • At 995 mm body length and 4,600 g, the unit needs a full-length support bracket — point-mounting at the ends only risks bow-induced non-uniformity; always verify illumination uniformity across the 981.5 mm aperture during commissioning with the actual mount in place.
  • IP40 protection is for clean indoor environments only; if the installation area has coolant mist, metal fines, or wash-down cycles, a sealed enclosure with a transmission window must be added, which will reduce effective intensity and shift the working distance budget.
