Basler ace 2 a2A2600-64umBAS

a2A2600-64um

The a2A2600-64umBAS is part of Basler's ace 2 Basic line and uses a 1/2" Gpixel GMAX2505 global shutter CMOS sensor with 2.5 µm square pixels, resolving 2600 x 2160 px (5.6 MP nominal, marketed as 5 MP) at up to 64 fps over a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed interface (5 Gbit/s). It is a monochrome camera with a C-mount, M8 6-pin I/O connector (1 opto-coupled input, 2 GPIO), and is bus-powered via USB 3.0 at about 2.7 W typical. The camera supports GenICam and USB3 Vision protocols, offers 8/10/12-bit output, and carries an IP30 rating with a box housing measuring roughly 42.8 x 29 x 29 mm and weighing about 85 g. Quantum efficiency is ~53.6% (typical at 541 nm) with a dynamic range of ~70.8 dB.

Technical overview

The Basler ace 2 a2A2600-64umBAS is a 5 MP monochrome area-scan camera built on the 1/2" Gpixel GMAX2505 global shutter CMOS sensor. It resolves 2600 x 2160 pixels at up to 64 fps over a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed (5 Gbit/s) interface, with the option to push to roughly 70.4 fps when the Device Link Throughput Limit is disabled. The global shutter is the headline feature for installers: every pixel is exposed simultaneously, so fast-moving parts on a conveyor or rotating fixtures are captured without the geometric skew that a rolling-shutter sensor introduces. Paired with the 2.5 um square pixels and 8.5 mm sensor diagonal, this makes the camera well suited to high-throughput inspection where motion is constant and you cannot rely on stop-and-go indexing.

The small 2.5 um pixel packs 5.6 MP nominal resolution onto a compact 1/2" optical format (6.52 x 5.42 mm active area), which means field of view and working distance are easy to budget with standard C-mount optics. However, the fine pitch demands a lens with enough resolving power to actually deliver that detail to the sensor, so plan for a high-resolution C-mount lens rather than an economy unit. Because this is a monochrome sensor, it gives you full per-pixel sharpness with no Bayer interpolation, plus stronger sensitivity, making it a natural fit for defect, surface and dimensional work where color is not the discriminating feature. Reported quantum efficiency is about 53.6% typical at 541 nm with roughly 70.8 dB dynamic range, and 8/10/12-bit output lets you trade depth against bandwidth.

For integration, the camera is bus-powered over USB 3.0 at about 2.7 W typical, so a single cable carries both data and power, simplifying cabinet wiring on short-reach single-camera cells. Trigger and I/O run through an M8 6-pin connector providing one opto-coupled input plus two GPIO lines, which is enough to hardware-trigger acquisition from an encoder or PLC and to strobe an external light in sync with exposure. The camera speaks USB3 Vision and GenICam, so it drops into standard vision software (including Basler's pylon SDK) without a proprietary frame grabber. The compact box housing (roughly 36.3 x 29 x 29 mm, about 85 g) and IP30 rating point to use inside an enclosure or a clean machine guard rather than a washdown environment, and the -10 to 60 C operating range covers typical factory-floor conditions.

Best for

  • High-speed defect and surface inspection on moving conveyors where the global shutter freezes motion without distortion at up to 64 fps
  • Dimensional measurement and gauging tasks that benefit from 5 MP monochrome resolution and crisp, interpolation-free edges
  • Industrial OCR/OCV and code-quality reading where fine monochrome detail and per-pixel sharpness improve character and mark legibility
  • Single-camera robot-guidance and pick cells where USB 3.0 bus power and a compact 85 g housing simplify mounting on or near the end effector
  • Packaging-line inspection inside an enclosure, hardware-triggered from a PLC or encoder via the opto-coupled M8 input

Selection notes

  • The 2.5 um pixel is demanding optically: specify a high-resolution C-mount lens rated for small-pixel sensors, or the lens, not the sensor, will limit achievable detail.
  • USB 3.0 is best for short, single-camera runs; cable length is limited compared to GigE or CoaxPress, so plan cable routing and consider active/locking USB3 cabling for reliable, vibration-resistant connections.
  • Bus power (about 2.7 W) removes a separate supply, but confirm the host port and any hub can deliver stable SuperSpeed power and 5 Gbit/s bandwidth, and budget headroom because 64 fps at full resolution can saturate the link.
  • Monochrome means no color discrimination: pair the camera with the right wavelength illumination (and optical filters) to maximize contrast on your target feature, and use the M8 opto-coupled input or GPIO to strobe that light in sync with exposure.
  • IP30 and the box housing are for protected installations; for dusty, wet or washdown lines you will need an external enclosure to keep the camera within its -10 to 60 C rating.
