Basler dart daA2500-14um

daA2500-14um

The Basler daA2500-14um is part of the dart Classic board-level camera series and delivers 2592 x 1944 px (5 MP) monochrome images at up to 14 fps. It is built around the onsemi MT9P031 1/2.5" progressive-scan CMOS sensor with a rolling shutter and 2.2 x 2.2 um pixels. The camera connects via a USB 3.0 interface (nominal 5 Gbit/s SuperSpeed) that also supplies 5 VDC power over a single cable, and it is compliant with USB3 Vision and GenICam. It is available in bare-board (no mount), S-mount, and CS-mount variants and is supported by the Basler pylon software suite.

Technical overview

The Basler dart daA2500-14um is a board-level area scan camera from the dart Classic series, built around the onsemi MT9P031, a 1/2.5" progressive-scan CMOS sensor that delivers 2592 x 1944 px (5 MP) monochrome images. With 2.2 x 2.2 um pixels on a 5.70 x 4.28 mm active area (7.13 mm diagonal), it packs a lot of resolution into a small format, which makes it well suited to detailed inspection of small to mid-size parts where you need fine spatial sampling but do not require a large sensor. As a monochrome model it captures grayscale only, so it maximizes light sensitivity and edge contrast for tasks like measurement, code reading, and defect detection rather than color sorting. The trade-off to understand up front is the rolling shutter: rows are exposed sequentially, so the camera is at its best on stationary or slow-moving scenes. Fast-moving parts can show skew or smear unless motion is frozen with a short strobe or the part is paused under the field of view.

Speed is modest and deliberate. The sensor runs at up to 14 fps at full 5 MP resolution, positioning this as a high-resolution, low-to-moderate-throughput camera rather than a high-speed one. For line-rate or fast indexing applications you would either trigger on each part, use a region of interest to raise the frame rate, or step up to a faster model. Connectivity is USB 3.0 (nominal 5 Gbit/s SuperSpeed) compliant with USB3 Vision and GenICam, so it drops into standard machine-vision software stacks and is supported directly by Basler's pylon suite. A single USB 3.0 cable carries both the 5 Gbit/s data and 5 VDC power, which simplifies wiring; total power draw is just 1.4 W. USB 3.0 keeps cable runs short and favors a host PC located close to the camera, so this is a PC-based vision building block rather than a long-distance networked one.

Mechanically this is a true board-level camera. The housing is board-level construction at 19.9 x 29.3 x 29 mm and just 15 g, intended for embedding inside an enclosure, handheld device, or compact machine where space and weight are constrained. It is offered in bare-board (no mount), S-mount, and CS-mount variants, so lens choice depends on the variant you order: S-mount (M12) board lenses for the smallest, lowest-cost optics, or CS-mount for more standard C/CS optics via the appropriate variant. Whichever you pick, the lens must resolve the 2.2 um pixel pitch and cover the 1/2.5" sensor to actually deliver the 5 MP the sensor can produce. The operating temperature range is 0 to 50 C, suitable for typical indoor industrial and lab environments rather than harsh outdoor or high-heat installations. Because it has no built-in IP-rated enclosure, plan on protecting the board inside your own housing.

Best for

  • Embedded high-resolution inspection inside compact machines, handheld devices, or tight enclosures where the 15 g, 19.9 x 29.3 x 29 mm board-level form factor is a hard constraint
  • Detailed defect inspection of small to mid-size parts in electronics and medical-device production, using the 5 MP (2592 x 1944 px) monochrome detail for fine surface and edge features
  • Industrial OCR/OCV and reading of printed or marked codes for traceability on stationary or indexed parts presented to the field of view
  • Dimensional measurement and gauging where grayscale edge contrast and 2.2 um pixel sampling support precise sub-pixel edge location
  • PC-based vision stations and robot-guidance cells where a USB 3.0 host PC sits close to the camera and parts are stationary or slow-moving

Selection notes

  • Rolling shutter means moving parts can skew or smear. Reserve this camera for stationary, paused, or slow-indexed parts, or freeze motion with a short-duration strobe synchronized to the exposure.
  • At full 5 MP the sensor tops out at 14 fps, so confirm your cycle time fits. For faster throughput, plan to trigger per part or crop to a region of interest to raise the frame rate.
  • USB 3.0 favors short cable runs and a nearby host PC. Verify the host has a SuperSpeed (5 Gbit/s) USB 3.0 port with enough sustained bandwidth, and budget cable length accordingly rather than for long networked runs.
  • Lens selection depends on the variant ordered (bare board, S-mount, or CS-mount). Choose optics that cover the 1/2.5" format and resolve the 2.2 um pixel pitch, or the effective resolution will fall short of 5 MP.
  • It is a board-level camera with no IP-rated enclosure (0 to 50 C operating range). Design a protective housing and thermal path, and keep it out of wet, dusty, or high-heat locations.
  • Monochrome only: it delivers grayscale images optimized for contrast and sensitivity. If your application needs color discrimination, this model is not the right fit.
