STC-MBS312POE

The STC-MBS312POE (monochrome) and STC-MCS312POE (color) are GigE Vision 2.1 area scan cameras built around the Sony IMX265 1/1.8-inch global shutter CMOS sensor delivering 2048×1536 pixels (3.2 MP) at 34.9 fps with 3.45 µm pixel pitch. Both models support Power over Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af CLASS2) as well as an external +10.8–26.4 V DC supply and consume 4.4 W or less via PoE. The compact 29×29×53 mm aluminium housing with C-mount accepts trigger modes (edge preset, pulse width, free-run) and includes PTP (IEEE 1588) synchronisation, ROI, decimation, gamma, LUT, and up to 8 user-saved configurations. The mono variant outputs Mono8/10/12 formats; the color variant adds BayerRG and RGB8 plus auto white balance.

Technical overview

The STC-MBS312POE (monochrome) and STC-MCS312POE (color) are built around the Sony IMX265, a 1/1.8-inch Pregius global shutter CMOS sensor delivering 2048 x 1536 pixels (3.2 MP) at a 3.45 µm pixel pitch. The global shutter architecture captures the entire frame simultaneously, eliminating the motion artefacts and geometric distortion that rolling-shutter cameras introduce when imaging fast-moving parts on conveyor lines or robot end-effectors. At 34.9 fps full resolution the camera sustains throughput for most inline inspection stations without dropping cycles. The 3.45 µm pixel pitch is a practical balance: fine enough to resolve features on electronics pads, pharmaceutical embossing, or automotive fasteners without demanding expensive large-aperture lenses, yet large enough to maintain adequate full-well capacity and dynamic range in demanding factory lighting conditions.

The interface choice — GigE Vision 2.1 over Power over Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af CLASS2) — directly shapes installation economics. A single Cat 5e/6 cable carries both 1000BASE-T image data and camera power; the camera draws 4.4 W or less from the PoE link, eliminating a dedicated power cable and power supply at every station. Cable runs of up to 100 m are supported without active components, making the camera practical for large factory floors where cameras must be mounted far from the control cabinet. For multi-camera lines requiring precise inter-frame alignment, the built-in IEEE 1588 PTP synchronisation lets all cameras on the same network lock to a grandmaster clock, enabling coordinated triggering without additional hardware. When PoE switch ports are unavailable, an external 10.8–26.4 V DC supply can be used instead. The GigE Vision / GenICam compliance means any standards-compliant vision software — including Omron's FH series, Halcon, VisionPro, or OpenCV with Aravis — can drive the camera without custom drivers.

The compact 29 x 29 x 53 mm aluminium housing and 65 g mass make the STC-MBS312POE easy to integrate into tight gantries, collaborative-robot wrists, or multi-camera bracket arrays where space and mass budgets are constrained. The C-mount accepts the widest range of industrial lenses from standard fixed-focal to telecentric optics suited to dimensional gauging. Three trigger modes — edge preset, pulse width, and free-run — cover the most common factory synchronisation patterns: encoder-triggered part-present pulses, strobe-width-controlled exposure for high-intensity LED flashes, and continuous streaming for live robot guidance. ROI, decimation, gamma, LUT, and up to eight user-saved configurations allow integrators to pre-program recipes for different product variants and switch them without reconnecting to the host PC. The monochrome variant outputs Mono8, Mono10, and Mono12 pixel formats, enabling 10- or 12-bit pipelines for algorithms that require fine grey-level discrimination; the color variant adds BayerRG and RGB8 with auto white balance for tasks such as color-label verification or food colour grading.

Best for

  • Inline surface and defect inspection of electronics PCBs, semiconductor packages, and automotive stampings where global shutter is required to freeze part motion without geometric distortion
  • Dimensional measurement and gauging of mechanical parts on conveyor lines, especially when paired with a telecentric C-mount lens exploiting the 1/1.8-inch sensor format
  • Pharmaceutical and medical-device packaging inspection including blister-pack fill verification, label OCR/OCV, and tamper-evident seal checks, where 3.2 MP resolution resolves fine text and the PoE cable simplifies compliance wiring
  • Robot guidance and pick-and-place vision where the 65 g mass and 29 x 29 mm footprint allow mounting on a robot wrist or a compact fixed bracket, and PTP synchronisation coordinates multiple cameras across a cell
  • Multi-camera distributed inspection stations on large production lines where 100 m GigE cable runs and single-cable PoE reduce infrastructure cost compared with USB3 or Camera Link installations

Selection notes

  • Lens selection must cover the 1/1.8-inch (approximately 8.9 mm diagonal) image circle; lenses rated only for 1/2-inch or smaller sensors will vignette the corners of the 2048 x 1536 array and degrade edge-of-field accuracy
  • The 34.9 fps frame rate at full resolution is the ceiling — if your cycle time demands higher throughput, consider reducing resolution via ROI or decimation, which the camera supports natively, but confirm that the reduced pixel count still resolves the smallest feature of interest given your optical magnification
  • PoE power draw is 4.4 W or less, which falls within IEEE 802.3af CLASS2; verify that your PoE switch or midspan injector is af-compliant and that the per-port budget is not shared with other high-draw devices on the same switch
  • Operating temperature is specified to +39 °C ambient — in hot enclosures or near furnaces or ovens this ceiling can be reached; plan for enclosure ventilation or active cooling and verify ambient temperature at the mounting position before specifying the camera
  • For dimensional measurement applications requiring sub-pixel accuracy, the 3.45 µm pixel pitch and GenICam-exposed Mono10/12 formats are assets, but a stable strobe light source triggered via the pulse-width mode is essential to avoid exposure variation between frames; pair with a structured light or coaxial LED controller that accepts an external trigger
