GigE Vision area scan camera with 2448 x 2048 (5 MP) resolution, 2/3" global shutter CMOS sensor, 3.45 um pixel size and up to 23 fps. C-mount, 1000Base-T with Power over Ethernet, IP30 housing (42 x 29 x 29 mm), trigger and strobe I/O. Top resolution of the Datasensing E100 Series.
The Datasensing E198 (CAM-E198-GE) is an area scan camera built around a 2/3-inch monochrome global shutter sensor delivering 5 MP resolution (2448 px across the horizontal axis) with a 3.45 um pixel size, at frame rates up to 23 fps. Area scan capture means the full two-dimensional frame is exposed in a single acquisition, making it suited to imaging discrete parts, fields and scenes rather than continuous webs. The global shutter is the defining characteristic here: every pixel starts and stops integrating light simultaneously, so fast-moving objects are captured without the skew, smear or geometric distortion that a rolling shutter introduces. That property is what makes the camera dependable for dimensional measurement and any inspection where parts move past the field of view.
As a monochrome sensor, the E198 dedicates every photosite to luminance rather than splitting resolution across a colour filter array. The practical result is higher effective spatial resolution, better light sensitivity and sharper edge definition for the same pixel count - exactly what edge-finding, gauging and character recognition tasks benefit from. Combined with the 5 MP resolution and 3.45 um pixels, the camera offers a useful balance between fine spatial detail and a sensor format large enough to keep per-pixel light collection reasonable, supporting demanding measurement and defect-detection work where small features must be resolved.
Connectivity is GigE Vision with Power over Ethernet, so one cable can carry both image data and power. The camera speaks standard GigE Vision and GenICam, meaning it presents a vendor-neutral interface that integrates with mainstream machine-vision software and SDKs without proprietary driver lock-in. The C-mount and PoE single-cable approach keep the mechanical and wiring footprint compact, which simplifies deployment in cells and on machines where routing space is limited. The camera is also listed as Rosepetal-ready, reflecting its applicability to AI-based defect inspection workflows.
Best for
Dimensional measurement and gauging where global-shutter geometric fidelity is required to avoid distortion on moving or indexed parts
AI-based defect inspection on surfaces and components, leveraging the monochrome 5 MP detail and Rosepetal-ready integration
Industrial OCR and OCV for reading and verifying printed, marked or engraved characters and codes
Inline inspection of parts moving on conveyors or rotary tables, where the global shutter freezes motion cleanly
Multi-camera GigE Vision installations using PoE to reduce cabling, where standardised GenICam integration matters
Selection notes
Use a C-mount lens with an image circle that covers the 2/3-inch sensor format and resolving power matched to the 3.45 um pixel pitch; an under-specified lens will limit the effective resolution the 5 MP sensor can deliver, particularly for fine OCR or measurement features.
Because the sensor is monochrome, plan lighting around contrast and geometry rather than colour - consider wavelength selection, directional or low-angle illumination for surface defects, and backlighting for silhouette-based dimensional measurement.
Budget the GigE Vision link: network bandwidth bounds the sustainable throughput at full resolution, so verify the 23 fps target fits your available bandwidth, and use quality Ethernet cabling within standard length limits. Confirm your switch or NIC supplies PoE if you intend to power the camera over the data cable.
Confirm your software stack supports GigE Vision and GenICam (most mainstream machine-vision packages do); this keeps the camera interchangeable and avoids proprietary driver dependencies.
If the application needs colour discrimination, higher frame rates, or substantially higher resolution than this model offers, evaluate a different camera in the series or interface class rather than forcing a fit.

Applications this camera is commonly selected for. Open one to see the full recommended hardware and approach.
1. Install the IMPACT Software Suite and connect the camera
Install the IMPACT Software Suite on your PC, which provides both the configuration/viewer tools and the SDK. For a GigE Vision model (E100, M or U series), connect it to a dedicated NIC and, for USB3 models, use a certified USB3 cable and port. Power the camera and confirm it enumerates.
2. Bring the camera online and verify the link
For GigE Vision, put the camera and the host NIC on the same subnet (a static IP on the camera matching the NIC range is the most reliable starting point); for USB3, confirm the device is recognized. Open the IMPACT viewer/device tool, discover the camera, and verify a stable connection before streaming. Enabling jumbo frames on the NIC helps GigE throughput.
3. Set exposure, gain and trigger, then grab a first image
In the IMPACT tools, start a live stream and adjust exposure and gain until the image is well-lit without saturation; set white balance on color models. Begin in free-run (continuous) mode to confirm imaging, then switch to hardware or software trigger as your application requires. Capture and save a reference image once the scene looks correct.
4. Build a vision tool or move to the SDK/API
Use the IMPACT point-and-click vision tools to assemble an inspection, or use the IMPACT SDK to access the camera and results programmatically and feed them into your HMI/PLC application. As these are GenICam/GenTL-compliant devices, you can alternatively drive them from any GenICam-compliant third-party vision library if your pipeline standardizes on one.
5. Route the stable feed to deep-learning inspection (optional)
Once you have a stable, repeatable image, the feed can be sent to a deep-learning inspection platform such as Rosepetal for defect detection or classification tasks that go beyond rule-based tooling. Keep lighting, optics and trigger timing fixed so the images reaching the model stay consistent.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. The E198 uses a global shutter sensor, so all pixels are exposed simultaneously. This eliminates the motion skew and distortion associated with rolling shutters, which is important for accurate dimensional measurement and for imaging parts that are moving during capture.
It connects over GigE Vision and supports Power over Ethernet, so a single Ethernet cable can deliver both image data and power. It implements the GigE Vision and GenICam standards for vendor-neutral integration. Use appropriately rated Ethernet cabling within standard length limits, and a PoE-capable switch or injector if powering over the data line.
It is a monochrome camera with 5 MP resolution (2448 px horizontally). A monochrome sensor puts all of its pixels toward luminance detail, giving higher effective resolution and sensitivity than a colour sensor of the same pixel count - well suited to measurement, defect detection and character reading.
The camera uses a C-mount and a 2/3-inch sensor with 3.45 um pixels. Choose a C-mount lens whose image circle covers the 2/3-inch format and whose resolving power matches the pixel pitch so you can realise the full detail of the 5 MP sensor.
Up to 23 fps at full resolution. Combined with the global shutter, this supports inspection of indexed or moving parts; confirm that your GigE Vision link bandwidth and exposure requirements allow the target rate in your specific configuration.
