iRAYPLE A7040 Series (0.4 MP IMX287, up to 437 fps)

A7040MG000E

The A7040 family uses a 1/2.9" Sony IMX287 global-shutter CMOS sensor with 6.9 µm pixels at 720x540 resolution (0.4 MP), offered in monochrome and color (Bayer) variants. The USB3.0 model (A7040CU000E) reaches 437 fps, the CameraLink models (A7040MK402E/A7040CK402E) reach 349 fps, and the GigE models (A7040MG000E/A7040CG000E) run at 300 fps. All variants provide ~70 dB dynamic range, ~38 dB SNR, C-mount optics, software/hardware/free-run trigger modes and a rich ISP feature set (gamma/LUT, ROI, flip, defect correction). They are compliant with their respective machine-vision standards (GigE Vision, USB3 Vision, GenICam) depending on interface.

Technical overview

The iRAYPLE A7040 series pairs a low pixel count with very high speed, and that combination is the whole point. At 720 x 540 (0.4 MP) it builds on a 1/2.9-inch Sony Pregius IMX287 global-shutter CMOS sensor with large 6.9 um pixels. Global shutter means every pixel is exposed simultaneously, so fast-moving parts are captured without the skew or smear that a rolling-shutter sensor would introduce. The large 6.9 um photosites collect a lot of light per pixel, which is what makes the rated ~70 dB dynamic range and ~38 dB SNR achievable even at short exposure times. For an installer, this is a camera you reach for when motion is fast and the feature you need to resolve is relatively coarse, not when you need fine pixel-level detail across a large field of view.

Speed is interface-dependent, and the model code tells you which ceiling you get. The USB3.0 variant (A7040CU000E) tops out at 437 fps on USB bus power, the CameraLink models (A7040MK402E / A7040CK402E) reach 349 fps over PoCL, and the GigE models (A7040MG000E / A7040CG000E) run to 300 fps with PoE or 9-24 VDC power. The trade is the usual one: GigE gives you up to 100 m of cable reach and clean single-cable PoE wiring at a lower frame rate, USB3.0 gives you the highest fps over short bus-powered runs, and CameraLink sits between them with deterministic low-latency capture. All variants speak the matching machine-vision standard (GigE Vision, USB3 Vision, GenICam), so they drop into standard acquisition software regardless of which interface you specify.

Optically and mechanically the A7040 is built for tight, fast stations. It uses a C-mount and the small 1/2.9-inch sensor, so compact, inexpensive C-mount lenses cover the format without vignetting and without demanding a large-format optic. The body is a 29 x 29 x 29 mm cube weighing 60 g and drawing 3.2 W, which fits on a robot arm, inside a sorter, or in a crowded multi-camera cell. It is rated -30 to +50 C for cold or warm enclosures. Mono (A7040M*) and color/Bayer (A7040C*) options exist; mono is the choice for measurement, OCR/OCV and presence checks where sensitivity and edge contrast matter, while color is for jobs that genuinely depend on hue. Because exposure times are short at high fps, plan on bright, controlled lighting, and use the hardware trigger and strobe to freeze each part deterministically.

Best for

  • High-speed defect and presence inspection on fast-moving lines where parts must be frozen without motion blur but the feature size is coarse enough for 0.4 MP
  • On-the-fly OCR/OCV and 1D/2D code reading of date codes, lot codes and labels moving at production speed
  • Dimensional gauging and edge-based measurement of small components where the global shutter guarantees geometric accuracy on moving parts
  • Robot guidance and pick stations needing a tiny 29 mm, 60 g, low-power camera that mounts on the arm or in a confined cell
  • Logistics sortation and reject verification where high frame rate and short exposures let one camera service a rapid indexing or conveyor flow

Selection notes

  • Pick the interface for your constraint: USB3.0 (A7040CU000E) for the maximum 437 fps on short bus-powered runs, GigE (A7040MG/CG000E) at 300 fps for up to 100 m reach and single-cable PoE, or CameraLink (A7040MK/CK402E) at 349 fps for low-latency deterministic capture. Each ceiling is fixed by the model, not configurable after purchase.
  • This is a 720 x 540 (0.4 MP) sensor; confirm your smallest defect or character spans enough pixels at your required field of view before committing, because resolution, not speed, is the limiting factor here. Larger fields of view will need multiple cameras or a higher-resolution model.
  • Budget the light. To exploit 300-437 fps you run very short exposures, so size bright, controlled illumination and pair it with the camera's hardware trigger and strobe output to freeze each part. Continuous lighting may not deliver enough energy in the available exposure window.
  • Choose mono for measurement, OCR/OCV and contrast-based inspection (best sensitivity and edge definition); choose the color/Bayer variant only when the task genuinely depends on color, since the Bayer filter costs effective resolution and light.
  • Spec a C-mount lens that covers the 1/2.9-inch format; the small sensor keeps optics compact and low-cost, but verify the lens resolves at the 6.9 um pixel pitch and gives the working distance your station geometry allows.
