Basler ace acA5472-5gm / acA5472-5gc (20 MP GigE)

acA5472-5gm

The Basler ace acA5472-5gm/-5gc is a high-resolution area-scan camera using the Sony IMX183 progressive-scan CMOS sensor (1" optical format, 2.4 x 2.4 um pixels) for 20 MP at 5 fps over a Gigabit Ethernet (GigE Vision / GenICam) interface. Both share a C-mount, 10/12-bit pixel depth, and a compact 42 x 29 x 29 mm IP30 housing powered by PoE (IEEE 802.3af) or 12-24 VDC. The monochrome 5gm (order no. 107769) offers 75.2% peak quantum efficiency and 71.2 dB dynamic range; the 5gc (order no. 107770) is the equivalent color model. The IMX183 uses a rolling shutter, distinguishing it from global-shutter Basler ace variants.

Technical overview

The Basler ace acA5472-5gm/-5gc packs 20 MP (5472 x 3648 px) onto the Sony IMX183, a 1-inch progressive-scan CMOS sensor with 2.4 x 2.4 um pixels. That combination is the core trade-off to understand: the sensor delivers a very dense pixel grid on a moderately sized imager, so it excels at resolving fine detail across a wide field of view, but the small 2.4 um pixels mean each photosite gathers comparatively little light. In monochrome the 5gm reaches 75.2% peak quantum efficiency and 71.2 dB dynamic range; the 5gc is the color equivalent. Practically, this is a camera you specify when you need to read small features, fine print, or sub-millimeter geometry over a part that is too large to cover at lower resolution, and where you can supply enough light to keep exposures short.

The defining caveat is the shutter. The IMX183 is a rolling shutter, which sets the acA5472 apart from the global-shutter members of the Basler ace family. Rolling shutter reads the 3648 rows sequentially rather than exposing the whole frame at once, so any relative motion between camera and part during the readout window produces geometric skew. At the rated 5 fps over Gigabit Ethernet, this camera is built for stationary or slow-indexed inspection, not for freezing fast continuous motion. If the part must move while imaging, you stop it, index-and-settle, or freeze it with a short strobe flash so the effective exposure is far shorter than the line-readout time. For static, high-detail captures the rolling shutter is a non-issue and you get the full 20 MP benefit.

On the system side the camera uses a standard GigE Vision / GenICam interface at 1000 Mbit/s, giving clean integration with any GigE Vision-compliant software over a single Cat cable. Power is flexible: PoE per IEEE 802.3af, or 12-24 VDC, drawing only 2.6 W, so a single Ethernet run can carry both data and power. The optics interface is a C-mount, and because the imager is a 1-inch format (13.13 x 8.76 mm, 15.86 mm diagonal) you must pair it with a lens rated to cover a 1-inch sensor and resolve 2.4 um pixels; an undersized or low-MP lens will throw away the resolution you paid for. The housing is a compact 42 x 29 x 29 mm box weighing 90 g, rated IP30 for clean indoor cabinets and enclosures, and operating from 0 to 50 C. Pixel data is output at 10/12-bit depth. Both mono (order 107769) and color (order 107770) share this body, so the mechanical and electrical design-in is identical regardless of which variant you choose.

Best for

  • High-resolution surface and defect inspection of large parts where 20 MP lets one camera cover a wide field while still resolving sub-millimeter flaws
  • Industrial OCR/OCV and reading of fine printed text, labels, and date codes on packaging and printed media
  • 2D code and traceability mark verification where dense pixels capture small printed or marked codes at the working distance
  • Dimensional measurement and gauging of stationary or index-and-settle parts that need fine pixel resolution across the whole field of view
  • Electronics and semiconductor inspection (PCBs, wafers, fine assemblies) where detail density matters more than frame rate

Selection notes

  • This is a rolling-shutter camera at 5 fps. Use it for static or stop-and-settle imaging, or freeze motion with a short strobe flash. If your application has continuous part motion, choose a global-shutter model instead.
  • Lens selection is critical: the 1-inch (15.86 mm diagonal) format with 2.4 um pixels demands a high-resolution C-mount lens rated to cover a 1-inch sensor. A lens that under-covers or under-resolves will cap effective resolution well below 20 MP.
  • Budget the light. The small 2.4 um pixels and short exposures needed for fine work mean lighting is the limiting factor; plan bright, controlled illumination (and strobe if any motion is present) to keep noise low and exposure times short.
  • Confirm GigE bandwidth and cabling. The 1000 Mbit/s GigE Vision interface streams 20 MP frames at 5 fps; provision a dedicated NIC or switch port, and use the PoE (802.3af) or 12-24 VDC option to simplify power over the single cable run.
  • Decide mono vs color up front. The 5gm (107769) maximizes sensitivity and resolution for grayscale defect, gauging, and OCR work; the 5gc (107770) is the same body when color is needed. The IP30 box housing suits clean indoor cabinets, not washdown or harsh environments.
