Basler boost boA4096-93cm

boA4096-93cm

The boA4096-93cm is part of Basler's boost series of high-speed CoaXPress 2.0 cameras and uses a 1-inch class Sony Pregius IMX255 monochrome CMOS sensor with global shutter and 3.45 µm pixels. It outputs 4096 x 2168 pixels (approximately 9 MP) at up to 93 fps over a single CXP-12 coaxial link (2.5–12.5 Gbps). The camera supports Power over CoaXPress (PoCXP) as well as external 24 VDC power via the I/O connector, typically drawing about 8 W. It uses a universal lens mount available in C-mount, F-mount and M42 configurations and is GenICam / CoaXPress 2.0 compliant.

Technical overview

The Basler boost boA4096-93cm pairs a 9 MP Sony Pregius IMX255 monochrome CMOS sensor with a single CoaXPress CXP-12 link, and the combination is the whole point of the camera: it is built to move a lot of pixels very fast. The 4096 x 2168 frame is read out at up to 93 fps nominal (up to 94 fps in 8-bit mode) over a 2.5-12.5 Gbps coaxial connection, sustaining a full-frame data rate that a GigE or even USB3 interface cannot hold at this resolution. The IMX255 is a 1.1-inch optical-format sensor (14.1 mm x 7.5 mm, 16.1 mm effective diagonal) with 3.45 um pixels and a true global shutter, so every pixel is exposed simultaneously. That global shutter is what makes the camera usable on fast-moving lines and indexing stages: parts crossing the field of view are captured without the skew or smear that a rolling shutter introduces, and exposure can be tightly synchronized to a strobe.

For the installer, the spec set translates into a high-resolution inspection workhorse that depends on a frame grabber. CoaXPress is not a plug-and-host interface like USB3 or GigE; it requires a CXP-12 frame grabber in the controlling PC, and that grabber both receives the image data and can deliver Power over CoaXPress (PoCXP) back down the same coax, so a single cable handles data, power, and trigger. If PoCXP is not used, the camera accepts external 24 VDC through its I/O connector, typically drawing about 8 W. It is GenICam and CoaXPress 2.0 compliant, so it integrates with standard machine-vision software stacks through the grabber's GenTL producer. The 3.45 um pixel pitch over 4096 horizontal pixels is the figure to design your optics around: at a given working distance the field of view and the achievable defect size are set by your lens focal length and this pixel size, and a 9 MP sensor will resolve features a 2-5 MP camera would miss.

The universal lens mount is a practical strength here. The body accepts C-mount, F-mount, or M42 lenses, which matters because a 1.1-inch sensor with a 16.1 mm diagonal sits at the upper edge of what many C-mount lenses cover cleanly; F-mount and M42 give access to larger image-circle optics when corner sharpness across the full frame is critical. Being monochrome, the sensor uses every photosite for luminance rather than splitting them across a Bayer color filter, which yields higher effective spatial resolution and better light sensitivity for the contrast-based tasks this camera targets: surface defects, edges, dimensional features, printed marks, and codes. The physical package is a 45 x 80 x 80 mm, 480 g body rated IP30 for clean indoor enclosures, with a 0-50 C operating range, so it is designed for cabinet-protected or guarded machine environments rather than open washdown areas.

Best for

  • High-speed surface and defect inspection on fast-moving webs or conveyor lines where the 93 fps global-shutter readout freezes motion without smear
  • High-resolution dimensional measurement and gauging that needs the 4096 x 2168 (9 MP) detail and 3.45 um pixel pitch to resolve small features in a single capture
  • Electronics and semiconductor inspection (component placement, wafer/PCB surface defects) where mono contrast and fine resolution matter more than color
  • Industrial OCR/OCV and traceability code reading on printing and packaging lines that require crisp, motion-free frames at line speed
  • Throughput-limited applications where GigE or USB3 cannot sustain full-frame data rates and a CXP-12 grabber link is justified

Selection notes

  • This is a frame-grabber camera: budget and rack space for a CoaXPress CXP-12 grabber in the host PC, since the camera will not connect directly to a standard NIC or USB port like a GigE/USB3 model would
  • Decide power delivery early - a single coax can supply Power over CoaXPress (PoCXP) for a clean one-cable run, or you can feed external 24 VDC through the I/O connector; plan for the roughly 8 W draw either way
  • Match optics to the 1.1-inch (16.1 mm diagonal) sensor: verify your lens image circle covers the full frame, and use the universal mount's C-mount, F-mount, or M42 options to step up to larger-format lenses if C-mount vignettes at the corners
  • Compute field of view and minimum detectable feature from the 4096 horizontal pixels and 3.45 um pitch at your working distance before committing focal length; the 9 MP resolution only pays off if the optics resolve to the pixel
  • Mono-only sensor: confirm your task is contrast/geometry based rather than color dependent, and plan lighting and trigger/strobe to exploit the global shutter for sharp captures at speed
  • IP30 rating and 0-50 C range mean enclosure or guarding is required in dusty or wet environments; this is not a washdown-rated camera
