Datalogic / Datasensing Datasensing CAM-E101C-GE (E101C) GigE Color Camera

CAM-E101C-GE

The CAM-E101C-GE (E101C, P/N 959933023) is the color variant of Datalogic/Datasensing's E101 GigE area-scan camera, built around a 1/4" CMOS global-shutter sensor with 659x480 resolution and 4.8 µm pixels, reaching frame rates up to 300 FPS. It uses a Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) interface with a C-mount lens connection and is powered either via Power over Ethernet or 12-24 VDC. The compact 42x29x29 mm housing carries an IP30 rating and operates from 0 to 50 °C, weighing roughly 90 g.

Technical overview

The CAM-E101C-GE (E101C) is the color variant of Datalogic/Datasensing's E101 GigE area-scan family, built around a 1/4" (3.07 x 2.3 mm) CMOS global-shutter sensor delivering 659 x 480 pixels (0.32 MP) on a 4.8 um pixel pitch. The defining trait here is the combination of a global shutter with a frame rate of up to 300 FPS at this modest resolution. Global shutter exposes every pixel simultaneously, so fast-moving parts on a conveyor or indexing fixture are frozen without the skew or smear a rolling shutter introduces. Pair that with 300 FPS and you have a camera aimed squarely at speed-limited tasks rather than detail-limited ones: presence/absence checks, counting, sorting, trigger-and-grab inspection, and motion-rich color sorting where throughput matters more than fine feature resolution. At 0.32 MP this is a low-resolution sensor by modern standards, so it suits applications where the feature of interest is large in the field of view or where you are reading color/contrast rather than tiny geometric detail.

Connectivity is standard GigE (Gigabit Ethernet) running the GigE Vision / GenICam protocols, which makes the camera vendor-neutral and easy to integrate into most machine-vision software and PLC-coordinated cells over an existing Ethernet infrastructure. A practical advantage of GigE is the long copper cable reach typical of Gigabit Ethernet, plus the convenience that this unit can be powered over the same cable via Power over Ethernet (PoE), with an alternative 12-24 VDC supply if PoE is unavailable. One cable for both data and power simplifies wiring on a crowded machine. The lens side uses a C-mount, the workhorse standard for industrial optics, and the 1/4" sensor format means C-mount lenses for 1/4" or larger formats will cover it comfortably; the small format also keeps lens cost and size down. Because it is a color sensor, the inspection can distinguish colors (label color, product variant, wire-color verification), which is the right choice when color is the discriminating feature, though a color sensor trades a little spatial and low-light sensitivity versus a monochrome equivalent.

Physically this is a compact, lightweight head: 42 x 29 x 29 mm and roughly 90 g, which makes it easy to mount on robot arms, tight inline fixtures, or multi-camera arrays. The environmental envelope is the main thing to design around: an IP30 rating means it is protected against larger solid objects and incidental contact but is not sealed against dust or liquids, so it belongs inside an enclosure or clean controlled area rather than open washdown or heavy-debris zones. Operating temperature spans 0 to 50 C (32 to 122 F). At 300 FPS the camera is generating short exposures, so it will lean heavily on adequate lighting and a hardware trigger to synchronize image capture with part position; budget for a bright, stable illuminator and, where motion is involved, a strobe-capable light and controller so the global shutter and the light pulse line up to freeze the scene.

Best for

  • High-speed presence/absence, counting, and sorting on fast conveyors or indexing lines where 300 FPS throughput matters more than fine pixel detail
  • Color-dependent verification such as product variant, label color, or wire-color checks that need a color sensor rather than monochrome
  • Packaging and surface inspection of large, well-lit features where 0.32 MP comfortably covers the region of interest
  • Robot-mounted or tightly-spaced multi-camera setups that benefit from the compact 42 x 29 x 29 mm, ~90 g head and single-cable PoE wiring
  • Trigger-and-grab inspection of moving parts where the global shutter freezes motion without rolling-shutter skew

Selection notes

  • This is a low-resolution sensor (0.32 MP / 659 x 480). Confirm your smallest defect or feature still spans enough pixels in the field of view; for fine-detail or large-FOV inspection a higher-resolution camera is the better fit.
  • IP30 only: the camera is not sealed against dust or liquids, so plan to install it inside an enclosure or in a clean, controlled area rather than washdown or debris-heavy environments.
  • GigE offers the long copper cable reach typical of Gigabit Ethernet and PoE single-cable wiring, but verify your network/frame grabber and PoE switch can sustain the bandwidth needed to actually hit 300 FPS, and that your software speaks GigE Vision / GenICam.
  • At 300 FPS exposures are short, so size the illumination accordingly and use the hardware trigger; for moving parts pair with a strobe-capable light and controller so the light pulse aligns with the global-shutter exposure.
  • Plan optics for the 1/4" (3.07 x 2.3 mm) format and 4.8 um pixels on a C-mount: choose a lens that covers at least 1/4" and resolves the pixel pitch to get the working distance and field of view you need.
