STC-SPB202PCL

The STC-SPB202PCL (mono) and STC-SPC202PCL (color) are compact 28 x 28 x 40 mm C-mount industrial cameras using a 1/1.7" Sony IMX430 global-shutter CMOS sensor with 1624 x 1240 effective pixels (2 MP) at 4.5 µm pitch, delivering up to 89.1 fps over a Camera Link Base (PoCL) interface conforming to Camera Link 2.1. They are powered via PoCL or an external +12 Vdc supply at 2.4 W or less and output 8/10/12-bit pixel formats (Mono8/10/12 or BayerRG8/10/12). Camera control includes 1 µs to 16.777 s exposure, 0-42 dB analog gain, x1-x16 digital gain, programmable gamma, 2x2 binning (mono only) and decimation, ROI scanning, and edge-preset/pulse-width/free-run trigger modes. The camera weighs approximately 40 g and operates from 0 to +41 deg C ambient.

Technical overview

At the core of the STC-SPB202PCL (mono) and STC-SPC202PCL (color) is a 1/1.7" Sony IMX430 Pregius CMOS sensor running a true global shutter, with 1624 x 1240 effective pixels (2 MP) on a 4.5 um pixel pitch and a peak rate of 89.1 fps. The global shutter is the defining trait here: every pixel is exposed simultaneously, so fast-moving parts on a conveyor or indexing fixture are frozen without the skew or smear a rolling-shutter sensor would introduce. Combined with the 4.5 um pitch and a relatively large 1/1.7" optical format, the IMX430 is a sensitive, low-noise sensor that holds up well in the moderate light budgets typical of inline inspection. At 2 MP the camera sits in the workhorse band: enough resolution for most defect, presence/absence and code-reading tasks while keeping data volume and processing load manageable.

The interface is Camera Link Base over PoCL, conforming to Camera Link 2.1, which is a deterministic, low-latency, cabled link with no packet jitter or driver-stack overhead. That makes the camera a natural fit where tight, repeatable trigger-to-image timing matters and where the frame grabber already anchors the vision pipeline. PoCL (Power over Camera Link) lets a single cable carry both the link and power, simplifying the harness; alternatively the camera takes an external +12 Vdc supply, drawing 2.4 W or less. Pixel output spans 8/10/12-bit formats (Mono8/10/12 on the mono variant, BayerRG8/10/12 on the color variant), so you can trade bit depth for bandwidth or keep extra dynamic range for subtle grayscale defects. The choice between the mono SPB and color SPC models is the usual one: pick mono for maximum sensitivity, sharpness and code/OCR contrast, and color only when the inspection genuinely depends on hue.

On the integration side the camera is compact and light: a 28 x 28 x 40 mm body weighing about 40 g with a standard C-mount, which keeps it easy to design into tight stations and onto lightweight gantries or robot arms. Exposure is programmable from 1 us to 16.777 s, with 0-42 dB analog gain, x1-x16 digital gain, programmable gamma, ROI scanning, decimation and 2x2 binning (mono only) for trading resolution against speed and sensitivity. Trigger modes include edge-preset, pulse-width and free-run, so the camera slots cleanly into a hardware-triggered line where a PLC or encoder fires each acquisition and a strobe lamp is gated to the exposure. The ambient operating window is 0 to +41 deg C, so factory-floor enclosures with reasonable thermal management are fine, but hot zones near ovens or outdoor installs will need cooling or relocation.

Best for

  • Hardware-triggered inline inspection of moving parts where the global shutter freezes motion without skew, fed by a PLC or encoder trigger
  • 2 MP defect and surface inspection on conveyors, indexing tables or web lines, with the mono variant giving the sharpest grayscale contrast
  • OCR/OCV and traceability code reading where deterministic Camera Link timing and an ROI keep latency tight and predictable
  • Dimensional measurement tasks that benefit from the low-distortion global shutter and the 4.5 um, low-noise Pregius sensor
  • Compact, weight-sensitive stations and robot-mounted setups where the 28 x 28 x 40 mm, ~40 g C-mount body must fit a tight footprint

Selection notes

  • This is a Camera Link Base (PoCL) camera, so it requires a matching Camera Link frame grabber; budget for the grabber, the CL cable and a host PCIe slot rather than a simple plug-and-play USB/GigE link.
  • Decide mono (STC-SPB202PCL) vs color (STC-SPC202PCL) up front: mono gives higher sensitivity and sharper code/OCR and defect contrast, color only earns its place when the inspection depends on hue. Note 2x2 binning is offered on the mono model only.
  • Spec the lens for the 1/1.7" format and C-mount, and size it from the 4.5 um pixel pitch and your required field of view and working distance so optical resolution actually matches the sensor.
  • Pair the exposure (1 us to 16.777 s) and trigger modes (edge-preset, pulse-width, free-run) with a strobe or continuous lamp; for fast lines, gate a strobe to a short exposure and use the global shutter to stop motion crisply.
  • Confirm power and thermal: supply via PoCL or external +12 Vdc at 2.4 W or less, and keep ambient within 0 to +41 deg C, which rules out unmanaged hot enclosures or high-temperature zones without added cooling.
