Omron / Sentech Sentech STC-CMB401PCL / STC-CMC401PCL

STC-CMB401PCL

The STC-CMB401PCL (mono) and STC-CMC401PCL (color) are high-speed cubic 4MP cameras using the ams/CMOSIS CMV4000 1-inch CMOS global-shutter sensor with 2048 x 2048 resolution and 5.5 um pixels. They output full resolution at up to 179.2 fps over an 80-bit Camera Link interface (Full / Medium / Base, Camera Link 2.1) and use a C-mount. The compact 40 x 40 x 40.5 mm housing weighs about 90 g, consumes 3.0 W or less, and supports Power over Camera Link (PoCL) or external 12 Vdc, with edge-preset, pulse-width, and free-run triggering plus configurable AOI.

Technical overview

The STC-CMB401PCL (monochrome) and STC-CMC401PCL (color) are built around the ams/CMOSIS CMV4000 1-inch CMOS sensor, a 2048 x 2048 array of 5.5 um pixels that delivers 4.2 MP (4 MP) of true global-shutter capture. The global shutter is the headline capability here: every pixel integrates light over the same instant, so fast-moving parts, indexing conveyors, and rotating components are frozen without the skew or smear that a rolling shutter introduces. Combined with a peak rate of 179.2 fps at full 2048 x 2048 resolution, this camera is squarely aimed at high-speed inspection where you need both spatial detail and the ability to catch parts on the fly rather than stopping the line. The square 2048 x 2048 format is convenient for inspecting square or radially symmetric parts (wafers, lids, fasteners, print fields) because it uses the full sensor without wasting one axis.

On the connectivity side, this is a Camera Link camera, not a GigE or USB3 device, and that choice drives the whole installation. The interface is an 80-bit Camera Link 2.1 link supporting Full, Medium, and Base configurations, so you can trade off cable count and bandwidth against the frame rate you actually need; full 179.2 fps streaming requires the wider Full configuration into a Camera Link frame grabber. All imaging is handed to a PC-based vision system through the grabber. Power can come over the cable via PoCL (Power over Camera Link) where the grabber and cable support it, or from an external +12 Vdc supply, which keeps wiring tidy when PoCL is available. Note that power is PoCL, not PoE, so do not plan around an Ethernet power budget.

Optically and mechanically, the camera uses a standard C-mount and a 1-inch sensor, so lens selection should target lenses rated for at least a 1-inch image circle to avoid vignetting and corner softness; the 5.5 um pixel pitch is moderately demanding, so a lens with sufficient resolving power for 4 MP class sensors is the safe pairing. The housing is a genuinely compact 40 x 40 x 40.5 mm cube weighing about 90 g, drawing 3.0 W or less, which makes it easy to mount in tight cells, on robot end-effectors, or in multi-camera arrays where space and heat matter. Triggering is flexible: edge-preset, pulse-width, and free-run modes let you sync to an encoder, photoeye, or PLC, and a configurable AOI (area of interest) lets you crop the readout to boost effective frame rate or limit data volume for a specific feature. Because exposures are short at these speeds, plan for strong, well-controlled illumination strobed to the trigger to keep motion frozen and SNR high.

Best for

  • High-speed defect and surface inspection on moving lines where a global shutter must freeze parts at up to 179.2 fps without motion smear
  • Electronics and semiconductor inspection of square or wafer-like parts that benefit from the full 2048 x 2048 (4 MP) field
  • Dimensional measurement and gauging where global-shutter geometry keeps edges true on indexing or continuously fed product
  • Industrial OCR/OCV and print verification on fast packaging and printing lines, syncing captures to an encoder or photoeye via edge or pulse-width triggers
  • Space-constrained or robot-mounted vision cells, including multi-camera arrays, where the 40 mm cube housing, ~90 g weight, and 3 W draw simplify integration

Selection notes

  • This is a Camera Link 2.1 camera, so it requires a matching Camera Link frame grabber and a PC-based vision pipeline; there is no GigE/USB3 plug-and-play path.
  • To actually reach 179.2 fps at full resolution you must run the wider 80-bit Full configuration; Medium and Base configurations reduce cabling but also reduce achievable throughput, so size the grabber and cable for the rate your application needs.
  • Plan power deliberately: PoCL (Power over Camera Link) needs a PoCL-capable grabber and cable, otherwise wire the external +12 Vdc input. Power is PoCL and not PoE, so an Ethernet power budget does not apply.
  • Match the lens to the 1-inch sensor and 5.5 um pixels: choose a C-mount lens with at least a 1-inch image circle and resolving power suited to a 4 MP class sensor to avoid vignetting and corner softness.
  • Choose the variant up front: STC-CMB401PCL for monochrome (higher sensitivity and sharper edges for measurement and OCR) versus STC-CMC401PCL for color where chromatic features matter. Also respect the -5 to +40 C operating range and provide strong strobed lighting since short high-speed exposures need ample, controlled illumination.
